Gin, or $g99 1.75 asks marshal to quit post BOSTON (AP) The first time he was stunned. The second time he wasn't too surprised. Being fired from a job he thought was his had relieved Sandro Vitiello of his illusions very quickly. In a season when kickers have bounced around tne National Football League like blocked field goals, tiello has gotten the boot not once but twice by the same team. "It just made me grow up real quick," he says.

"You "find out football isn't all glamorous. It didn't take long for the rookie from Massachusetts to get trapped in a tangled web that snared three other kickers. Vitiello, drafted on the 10th round by the Cincinnati Bengals, figured the place-kicking job was his when veteran Chris Bahr was cut late in the preseason. But two days later, lan Sunter, just released by New England, was handed the job and Vitiello was out. Bahr moved on to Oakland, which had cut second- year kicker Jim Breech.

Meanwhile, back in Cincinnati, hunter wasn't doing the job and after 10 regular-season games he was gone. His replacement? Vitiello. "I was under the impression I would be there the rest of the season just to get my experience, so I wasn't too worried," he said. In his first game back his only activity was one kick-off. In his, second game he missed two field goal attempts.

There was no third game. He was out on the street again. Who took over? Breech. "It's a strange world. You have to learn to deal with it though," Vitiello said.

One lesson he learned through his adversity is that there is no grace period for kickers. "When you're first coming in you have to be perfect. You have to prove it right away," he said. "When you get an opportunity you have to grab it." Vitiello is upset with the way the Bengals treated him. Because they were not headed for the playoffs, he fig-" ured they would stick with him the second time even if he had a bad game.

"He's going to be a good kicker," said Cincinnati special teams coach Frank Ganz. "But we have fans here who want to see us do well now." Bob Pickett, Vitiello's coach at Massachusetts, said, "He has great potential if somebody stuck with They took a guy off the street when they brought Sandro back. He hasn't had a real shot at kicking for them. I haven't seen a better kicker and, obviously, teams in the NFL need kickers. They've been shuttling kickers in and out of camps like Waterboys." So far, the Bengals' latest move has paid off.

Breech's more than 24 hours. Village President David Bloch said Tyloch also apparently made unofficial long distance phone calls from his office. Tyloch's resignation was asked after a closed executive session of the board last Monday. Bloch said Friday that Tyloch has told him he soon would submit a written field goal with 12 seconds left gave Cincinnati a 34-33 victory over Baltimore. Vitiello went home to East Meadow, N.Y., and resumed working toward his degree in sports management at Massachusetts.

He hopes to catch on next season with an NFL team other than the Bengals. "I'm kind of relieved to be out of that organization because I question the way they do things," he said. "That may sound like sour grapes, but that's how it is." Vitiello said he didn't think he outkicked Bahr in preseason, but "he was making more money than I was and I think that was a consideration and he had made some remarks in the papers about management." Sunter played for Cincinnati Coach Forrest Gregg in the Canadian Football League and, when he became available after trying out with New England as a punter, Gregg snapped him up. "When a guy becomes available who you've had before, you have to go for him," Ganz said. "I had no idea about Sunter," said Vitiello.

"I never heard of the guy, to tell you the truth. All I know is Monday before the last preseason game I heard they were bringing somebody in to try out. "I even tried to talk to the guy but he wouldn't look at me. I guess he knew what I didn't. .1 was really surprised the first time.

The second time I wasn't so surprised. It had already happened once." The Bengals had been whipped 31-7 by Cleveland in the game in which, Vitiello missed two field goals. The following Tuesday," an day off from practice, Vitiello went to the locker room for treatment. "I saw this little guy (Breech is 5-feet-6) and he didn't look like a football player and I said, 'Oh, no; they did it I just went home and waited for a call," he said. He didn't wait long.

In almost the same words he had used the first time, Gregg told him he was gone, Vitiello said. "It's like a soap opera. It's so easy to pick a kicker up. But there doesn't seem to be any loyalty to it. They don't let you work out of a slump," he added.

Vitiello has been invited back to the Bengals' camp next season but said he'd go there only if no other team wants him. resignation. Bloch said no plans have been made for hiring a. Bew marshal. "We're going to Tampa at 6 p.m. on Monday," said General Manager Jim Murray after spending the morning rounding up a practice location to replace the frozen turf at John F. Kennedy Stadium. "We're practicing indoors today." The team has been working out in area gymnasiums. On Thursday, the team would return to Philadelphia, and practice on the astroturf of Veterans Stadium on Friday in preparation for Saturday's playoff game at the Vet, he said.

"We're going to pray a lot" that temperatures aren't as low as Friday's 6 degrees above zero, Murray said. "He (Vermeil) believes in concentration during practice.
