At that time it was -inconceivable -that the paths of jazz and the'itadium would some day cross--but they have. For the second consecutive year, jazz at Connie Mack Stadium has proved to be a financial diasler to its backers, It is unlikely anyone will try to Invade the North Philly premises again--losing money isn't usually classified as a hobby. Last weekend's production at the Phillies' habitat was highly professional i respects, operated by a group of seasoned producers. The talent was there too, and not on records. The acoustics were a delight to stereo buffs and the stage was close enough to the grandstand to provide a natural amphitheatre.

To the audience it was a to''the producers, a failure--a one. Jazz and Connie Mack Sta-' 'dium seem to lack coherency, but jazz in a ball park has been successful in Fenway Park, Boston and--the foremost festival of them-all--the Newport affair, is staged in Frcebody Park, an athletic stadium. Friday's show in Philadelphia ranged from the modern lo the ultra-modern with the lone sign of the older jazz tradition supplied by Ihe Duke Ellington band. Thelonius Monk, complete with a tan fedora, was there as the exponent of the way-out modernists and was unusually lively. Dinah Washington displayed a passion for lyrics which was quite moving.

The vocal trickery of the Lambert, Hendricks and Ross trio showed why the group is universally acclaimed, "The hottest new group in jazz." The question today bothering countless jazz enthusiasts is, "Like, where was Mahalia -Jackson?" The legendary gospel singer was scheduled'for a top-billed spot in Saturday evening's festivities. Friday night when the upcoming attractions for Saturday and Sunday were announced, Mahalia was not even mentioned.

Saturday's nesvspapcr advertisements had the Clara Ward Singers in Miss Jackson's spot -rbut no word of Mahalia. Mahalia never did make the scene and the producers never did clue--iu the public. So, it's even more distressing to learn that she canceled out several days before the opening of the festival. When Miss Jackson was added to Saturday's package, the entire affair was labeled "music festival" instead of "jazz festival," since Mahalia flatly refuses to be listed as a act. She was booked ostensibly for commercial purposes.

The failure to announce her cancellation publically was a fraudulent diversion on the part of festival promoters.
