When the station changed its name last year it dumped one of the oldest and most-, recognized broadcast names in the area, WTCN, which had served the station since it first signed on the aif in 1953 and which had identified a Ounagln's PeopleBy Ralph Ounagin universal Preee Syndicate in local radio station long before that.

SLINGSHOT Cd III I The station also dropped a bundle of green promoting the red, white and: blue of WUSA. Its promos were orgies of flags, fireworks and Barry Manilow music when it ran the lew name up the flagpole and retired the old call letters. While a bit too flashy and jingoistic for some tastesMrp new name has caught on ana sewed Channel 11 well. The station's only choice may be li the name that NBC newsman John -5 Chancellor suggested last year when he heard that Channel 1 1 was "No kidding? I Continued from page 1C some patriotic oomph to the company's bottom line. Gannett approved Channel 1 1 's move to embrace the new call letters last summer, but that was before Gannett made a $717 million deal to acquire several TV stations owned by the Evening News Association, including Washington's CBS affiliate, WDVM. Gannett has its corporate headquarters in the Washington area and also has its USA Today offices there. The company's broadcasting division is moving to Washington from Atlanta, so WDVM will be the company's flagship. Rumors have it that Gannett Chairman Allen Neuharth believes that the only thing he needs to make his Washington power base complete would be four rtty-bitty call letters, WUSA.

And Gannett knows just where it can get them. Gannett has yet to apply to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission to move WUSA's name to Washington. But the impending name change is the worst-kept secret in Washington since Wilbur Mills and Fanne Foxe bellyflopped in the Tidal Basin. A report in Friday's Washington Post had Gannett executives telling Channel 1 1 to dream up some new call letters, pronto, because the letters WUSA were being drafted and ordered to Washington. Gannett officials deny that they have gone that far but admit that the idea is under consideration.

"Nothing's being done on it at the moment, but it sounds like they would be good call letters for the nation's capital," said Ed Pfeiffer, vice president and general manager of Gannett's WDVM. "There's noth-. ing chiseled in stone at this point, but on paper it seems like a pretty good idea. No commitment has been made, but I wouldn't say it's not on the drawing board. We have been kicking it around." i a Bloomington 835-0255 Brooklyn 537-7779 Coon Rapids 757-2210 476-0579 Edina 925-5878 i "4 I changing its name to WUSA.
