The team extended North Carolina into overtime during a regular season game.

But with the pessimism usual to most coaches, Johnson says "Last year nobody expected us to beat anybody, and we won a lot of games. This year they're expecting us to be better, but there's a good chance we'll wind up with a worse record" than last year's 17-12. South Carolina opens Monday against Georgia of the Southeastern Conference in the Coliseum in Charlotte. DIAL BIGGEST MAN Last year's tali man on the squad, Fred Lentz, will have to look up, in heighth, at least, to sophomore Larry Dial, 6-10. The 6 8 Lenz also will be pushed by 6-7 Bob Frantz, who bandies the ball unusually well for a tali man.

wnere last year Wallace was the tallest forward available, at 6-4, this year junior Don Good- roe, a track hurdler who stands 6-7, will pair off with Mike Calla han, a 6-6 sophomore. Goodroe relieved Lentz last year. Also available for forward duty is 6-5 Bury Hudson, another sophomore. Goodroe gives promise of being the squad's most effective rebounder because of tremendous spring. Ray (Cookie) Pericola, last year's soph sensation at guard, will be back at his old stand.

The 6-2 playmaker will pair off with Prater, and they will be backed up by Fred Luigs, 6-4, and Walt Hudson, 6-5, both soph omores. Walt and Bury Hudson are twins who starred for Dre- her of Columbia in the 1954 and 1955 seasons. The utility man in Johnson's set-up is Dick Hoffman, junior letterman who played both guard and forward last year. He probably will alternate this year. A left-hander, he has a good, fast driving lay-up shot that's hard to stop, and is a fine floor man.

His shortness he's only 61 is against him, however. Also available are experienced seniors Lee Anderson, forward, and Wayne Godfrey, guard. South Carolina should have its first real bench strength in its basketball history. Virginia CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Nov. 30 i Quarterback Reece Whitley completed two touchdown passes to end Fred Polzer in the first period to lead a fired-up Virginia team to a surprising 20-13 victory over North Carolina today.

The great SMI passer, sensation of the Southwest Conference, was so badly rushed by the sweeping Horned Frogs that he wound up with a net loss of 56 yards. It was the heaviest margin TCU ever beat SMU in Southwest Conference play and left the Methodists winless in Fort Worth since 1945. A crowd of 25,000 watched the Frogs fight SMU off its feet virtually all the way, batter Meredith from pillar to post and then follow Finney, who scored two touchdowns, and Lasater, who ran 56 yards for the third counter, to a smashing triumph that probably knocked SMU out of bowl conten tion. The unknown is Dickie Prater, who was generally lost sight of during four years in the Air Force after a fine freshman season at the University of Kentucky. The 63 guard's extraordinary shooting ability won the "best shot" praise last year from Grady Wallace, now graduate, who led the nation's collegiate cage scorers.

Prater averaged 30 points a game on service teams, was on the Sampson Air Force Base service world championship team. More height and speed also will be evident on Coach Frank Leroy Reed returned the punt from the 44 to the Maroon 35. A pass from quarterback Bobby Franklin to Cowbov Woodruff moved tne ball to the 12. Then Franklin tossed a pass to John Brewer, who was stopped on the five. Woodruff from the five shredded the Maroon line for the touchdown and Robert Khayat converted.

Nov. 30 ijf) Mississippi and Mississippi State bowl minded foot ball giants fought to a bitter 7-7 ie today before 33.000 wind-chilled fans. Mississippi State in holding their State rival to a tie knocked the Rebels out of a share of the Southeastern Conference championship.

It was Mississippi's first blemish in six conference games this season. The Maroons, steamed up to the hilt, lost little time in driving to a touchdown. Quarterback Billy Stacy took the opening kickoff on his five and returned it to his own :6. And, after 11 vicious line smashes in five minutes, Bubher Trammell drove the final 18 yards over left tackle for the touchdown to cap i. 64-yard inarch.

Left tackle Bobby Tribble converted the Maroons into a 7-0 lead. Midway in the second period Mississippi opened its first ind last touchdown drive.
