Friday, October 4, 1957 GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE It seems the eminent William Herschel, LL. life on the moon. The headline appeared in the New York Sun of Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1835, and for the rest of the week the inhabitants of old New York couldn't get enough of the story. There was only one thing wrong.

'Great Moon Hoax' Was Sensation Century Ago Newspapers Have Come of Age Since the New York Sun Pulled Leg of Its Readers In the glorious, if somewhat flamboyant, days of pioneer American journalism, the story would sometimes take the newspaper by the tail. Looking back on those fabled days of journalism when fact was sometimes fiction, an AP newsfeatures writer found the great newspaper hoax more than a century ago.) By TOM HENSHAW NEW YORK IP. -The headline said: "Great Astronomical Discoveries." And, indeed they were. star-gazer Sir John Frederick F. R.

had discovered story sold fast and well in Paris, London and Glasgow. Scientists Get Brush Yale University sent a deputation of scientists to New York to study the "Journal of Science" originals. Locke and the Sun shuttle the nosy scholars from office to office until they returned to New Haven in bewilderment. The good ladies of Springfield, it was reported, wrote to Sir John Herschel inquiring the best way to transmit the gospel to the lunar heathen. The man-bats were Sir John's last great discovery on the moon.

The next day, reported the Sun, the astronomers carelessly left their telescope facing east and the rays of the rising sun burned a grippling hole in the reflecting chamber. Exposure of the hoax was not far behind. The thing was getting just too big to keep secret. Kept on Buying Locke himself, possibly in the top room of the Washington Hotel, happened to tell a friend. The friend happened Ito work for the Commerce.

I am sick as can be of the problem of three Worked into an up-to-date play. I am bored by the hero who's loved by The wife of another; and Oh, I am longing today for the old-fashioned play With the old-fashioned father, who's set in his way, Commanding his daughter to go, With the mercury twenty below.

won't quit the book I am reading Or move from my easy arm chair, Or take time to see, howe'er clever it be, The play of an ill-mated pair. The wife who is faithless disgusts me; Her morals I'm certain are bad. But I would go to view the old play that I knew, With the son coming back as the mortgage falls due, To save the old home for his dad. Though it took every cent that he had. I am weary of plots that are problems, I'm sick of these musical rags, And I'm never amused when a dance must be used To bolster a story that drags.

I long the old-fashioned sweethearts Whose troubles all close in Act Four When the lost will appears, and the mystery clears And the villain cries "cur-rses," and then disappears, When the hero shows him to the door And everything's lovely once more. SALESMEN Paper is a growth industry. Our company has a record of continuous profits and gradual expansion for the last 37 years. We manufacture toilet tissue, paper towels and paper napkins, which are nationally distributed through wholesalers and jobbers. Recent expansion has created a few openings for outside salesmen. These openings will require relocation out of the applicant's home town and probably out of the state Of Wisconsin.

To fill these openings we are looking for men who have an eye on the future as well as the present, men who do not want to stand still, and whose abilities are not being used to the fullest extent by their present employers. We are looking for men who have the extra ability and who want to put forth the extra effort to 'make a better than average success for themselves and for their company. Our employees are paid on a salary basis, and our outside salesmen are furnished with a company car and expense account. All employees are covered by group hospital and surgical insurance and group life insurance, paid for by the company, and they participate in a profit-sharing retirement plan under which their share is fully vested in them after ten years of participation. Starting salaries are set to fit the individual applicant's background and experience and the sales department gives competent supervision and leadership to help each man achieve his full potentialities.

A newspaper today thats foisted such falsehoods on subscribers would doubtless be run out of, business. But old New York was different.

It apparently was considered all good clean fun. The "Great Moon Hoax," as it came to be called, originated in the literary mind of an expatriate Englishman, Richard Locke, the $12-a-week editor of the Sun. At least, he admitted writing the stories. Locke was 35 years old, a writer of more than ordinary ability and a striking figure in New York's tap rooms and coffee houses. A friend, one Edgar testified: Out of Business am acquainted with person possessing so fine forehead as Mr.

Sir John, viewing the moon critters from a telescopic distance of what would be 80 yards, was able to report on them in some detail. They didn't work. They loafed all the time. They walked to each other with animated gestures.

It didn't take long for other I newspapers to get into the moon act. And, to their chagrin, they too billed their stories as reprints from the "Journal of Science."
