The Gazette had obligations which were MASOMC. For some years past the village of Depere and tbe Southern portion of Brown County have been agitated by numberless depredations by cattle thieves and house breakers. A family by the name of Spears had been suspected of many of the acts, but no proof could be produced against them.

In one case of cattle thieving Isaac cousin of one of the younger Spears, and Sandford Silver were arrested, the former in Waupaca County and the latter in Shawano County. The Spears family had been closely watched from last October. The arrests were made on Saturday, but sooner than at first intended, in consequence of some suspicious movements being made by the brothers who work in one of the shingle mills at Depere. The plan of arrest laid out was to capture the entire gang, who intended to tap the wheat warehouse of Cargill Van on Saturday evening, and the thieves had consummated their arrangement to drain the warehouse, having several teams engaged to haul the grain to Manitowoc. One of the members of the crowd, was one named Birdie seemed to be afraid of detection or of tbe old man, and be "squealed" on the entire gang; but in order tbat sufficient evidence could be brought to bear against the Spears, and ensure the capture of the party, illiams was ordered to "keep in" with the gang, and give notice of their movements.

As we stated the thieves intended to have a corner on wh eat on Saturday night and the purpose of the officers was to arrest them at that time, but through circumstances the plan was changed and the entire to be delivered to The Gazette.
