But the'pickoff attempt was in the dirt and skipped past Pete Rose into right field. Wilson raced around to third base on the error. After White flied out, George Brett drilled a 1-1 pitch down the right-field line, scoring Wilson.

It looked like a double, but Brett hustled it into three bases, sliding hard into third. He needn't have bothered, because Aikens was up next. The strapping first baseman hit an 0-1 pitch on a line over 'the 365-foot sign in right field. The ball fell just short of the waterfalls that decorate the area beyond the outfield wall in this beautiful ballpark. That made it 3-0 for Kansas City, but the Royals didn't stop there.

Designated hitter Hal McRae drilled a base hit to center and hustled it into a double. When Amos Otis followed with another double for a 4-0 lead, it finished Christenson, with Dickie Noles relieving. Christenson had made 22 pitches in his brief stay and allowed 12 total bases. A walk to Clint Hurdle and an infield single by U.L. Washington loaded the bases, but Noles retired Wilson to end the inning.

Phillies nicked Leonard for a run in the second. Garry Maddox dropped a one-out single to right. Manny Trillo forced him at second. But when Washington's relay was wild for an error, Trillo advanced to second. Continued on D-7 KANSAS CITY, Mo.

(AP) Slugging Willie Aikens smashed his vpy into the World Series record book Saturday with a pair of tremendous home runs that led the Kansas City Iloyals to a 5-3 victory over Philadelphia Saturday in Game Four. Their second straight victory at home enabled the Royals to tie the best-of-seven series at 2-2. Game 5 is scheduled today at 3:30 p.m. (CDT). The teams return to Philadelphia for the sixth game Tuesday night, Aikens exploded his third and fourth homers of this series in the first two innings as the Royals rushed into a big early lead.

Then Dennis Leonard, loser of the first game, made the bulge stand up with a gritty nine-hitter before being relieved in the eighth. Aikens also had two homers in the opening game of the series and became the seventh man in history to hit four or more homers in a single series' Duke Snider did it twice, and the others to accomplish the feat were Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Hank Bauer, Gene Tenace and Reggie Jackson, who owns the single-series record of five homers. Four players Gehrig, Ruth, Snider and Mickey Mantle all had two-homer games twice, in their careers, but Aikens became the first man to do it in one series. Aikens also became the fourth player in series history to hit homers in consecutive innings. The others were Ruth, who did it twice, Jackson and Ted Kluszewski.

The Royals came out swinging against Philadelphia starter Larry Chris tenson. It was the third successive defeat for Michigan State, which is winless in three Big Ten starts and has a 1-5 record for the season. Wisconsin took a 7-0 lead late in the first half. Startjng from their own 36, after a missed Michigan State field goal effort, the Badgers moved 64 yards in nine plays with Mohapp providing the big play and the touchdown. On the first play, Mohapp broke loose and rambled 40 yards to the Michigan State 24. He then carried four more times, gaining 16 yards, and three plays later punched it in from the 1.

The closest Michigan State came to scoring in the first half was in the first quarter, when Leister's passing arm took the Spartans from their own 20 to the Badger 1 1. But halfback Steve Smith took a crunching tackle from Vaughn Thomas and fumbled the ball away. Wisconsin iced the triumph late in the game1 when Michigan State's Tom Morris fumbled a punt and the Badgers recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Michigan State managed a third-quarter scoring pass from quarterback John leister to flanker Otis Grant. But the Spartans, unable to mount a ground attack all day against a rugged Badger defense, were prevented from putting together consistent offensive drives.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin ate up valuable time with a well-balanced offense that fell short of scoring but kept the ball away from the Spartans. Both teams were pla-qued by mistakes and lost opportunities that short-circuited scoring threats. Surprise! Preble, previously 5-1 overall, was ranked No. 8 in the recent AP poll. Sheboygan South entered the game 0-6. Going into today's game at Cleveland (kickoff at noon, CDT), the Packers have 10 games left on their regular-season schedule. Despite the many problems they've had en route to their 2-3-1 record, the Packers are only half-game behind the three teams that own the second-best record among wild-card contenders. San Francisco, Minnesota and Atlanta are all 3-3. Green Bay and Tampa Bay are 2-3-1.

Chicago and St. Louis are 2-4 and Washington and the New York Giants are 1-5. New Orleans is 0-6. Continued on D-2 conversion. Preble then took the ensuing kickoff and drove 65 yards in 14 plays, capped by a Bob Vanden Avond 5-yard run.

Nichol, who completed 19 of 37 for 180 yards, passed to speedster Pat Weas for a 33-yard gain. But Weas fumbled the ball, with Souths Mike Baskfield recovering at the 37-yard line. The Packers had just been beaten badly for the third week in a row. There was daily speculation about Coach Bart Starr's job status. The team's offense, dormant through the pre-sea-son, was showing only scant evidence of improvement. And awaiting the Packers were the Cincinnati Bengals (a team coming off a victory over Pittsburgh and a narrow loss to Houston) and the defending National Conference runnerup Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That was three weeks ago.
