the new vear Like the last conversation with Branch Rickey that took place toward the end of January He had made a special trip here to help elect the late James i Pud Galvin to baseball's hall of fame and while few knew anything about Galvin Rickey did "He deserves to be enshrined" said Rickey pitched 649 complete games and any man who does that should be remembered for posterity" Then there was that sunny March day in Lakeland Fla when a sudden halt was called to all activity in the spring training camp of the Detroit Tigers PLAYERS CALLED The players were summoned to the clubhouse and told manager Churck Dressen had suffered a heart attack Over at Vero Beach Fla that same month Sandy Koufax did some huffing and puffing after finishing 15 laps around the field "What I'd like most is to be able to pitch the entire year" he said shifting some bubble gum to the other side of his mouth "This is my llth year coming up I'd like' to make 15 if I can" Still later in March Dick Groat called the turn on the World Champion Cardinals when asked to predict where they would finish in 1965 "I really wouldn't care to say" declared Groat at St Petersburg kind of disease seems to have set into this league Pittsburgh won in 1960 and finished sixth in 1961 Cincinnati won in 1961 and finished third the following year San Francisco dropped in 1963 after winning in 1962 and then the Dodgers finished sixth in '63 after sweeping the Yankees in '62" Groat must have known something The Cards wound up seventh in '65 HARD TO FORGET Then it was on to Augusta Ga for the Masters in April and it's hard to forget the cloud of frustration that passed over Sammy Snead's face as he didn't even make the cut "I feel like burning my clubs" scowled Snead Jack Nicklaus wnet on to win it and he drew a laugh upon accepting his check "I don't care if they don't pay a penny for winning this one" he said "I play more for money Financially it doesn't mean a whole lot But I'm not gonna give it back" There was that feeling of utter helplessness among those who watched catcher Johnny Blanehard cry like a baby when I he Yankees traded him to the A's in May and that same month Sonny Liston's trainer Willie Reddish came up with the prediction of the century By FRANK ECK AP Newsfeatures Sports Editor Picking the horse of the year turned out to be a tedious chore after Kelso sustained an eye infection The gelding of 8 horse of the year five straight times was retired by Mrs du-Pont and racing was left without a clear cut champion Kelly had won 3 of 6 during the year Two polls rated Moccasin a 2-year-old filly as the best Another poll gave the nod to Roman Brother a little 4-year-old gelding Unbeaten in eight races Bull Hancock's Moccasin earned $319731 Winning 5 of 13 races Lou Wolfson's Roman Brother earned $257520 However the horse with the best credentials moneywise was a handsome looking colt named Buckpasser who won more than a half million dollars After the Ogden Phipps racer took Aqueduct's Champagne he was retired for the year with gleanings of $563-096 a record for a 2-year-old Another standout was Tom Rolfe a 3-year-old colt that won 9 of 12 races and $444901 Bold Lad was supposed to be the best 3-year-old but he had arthritis In his knees As the Kentucky Derby favorite he ran 10th That big race went to Lucky Debonair but two weeks later he bucked his shins and trailed Tom Rolfe in the tricia Liijenquist Elizabeth Lil-t jenquist Jeffrey Littlefield John Lund' Craig McCann Rex McFarland i Eddie Maxwell Gary Mead Terry Mikkelsen SKI ENTHUSIASTS June along with his subsequent turnover of the prize money to charity as memorable enough but even more so in my book anyway was the great try made bv 44-vcar-old -runnerup Kel Nagle A month later after blowing the Insurance City Open- Dave Marr sat down in the kitchen of his apartment and told his wife he'd never win a golf tournament because "there's too much dog in "me" There were tears of happiness in Marr's -eyes when he won the PGA title two weeks later at Ligonier Pa where he recalled the conversation with his wife Casey Stengel broke his hip in Julv onlv hours after fr had begged him to go home because it was getting late Casey Wouldn't leave though Too busy talking baseball with several of his old-timer buddies JOHNNY WONDERED Then came August with Johnny Pioseboro wondering whatever possessed Juan Ma-richal to konk him over the head with a bat and that episode was followed by Manuel Santana's national singles tennis victory 'at Forest Hills in September The memory of Santana's Spanish countrymen carrying their hero off on their shoulders still lingers on Koufax monopolized the month of October although there was a momentary interlude during which Leo Duroch-er was named manager of the Cubs That man Clay was back again in November and it wasn't enough that he beat Floyd Patterson but then everyone had to listen to how he did it Before the year was out baseball introduced a new commissioner and the White Sox a new manager Everyone had heard of the manager before but no one had heard of the commissioner And that's the kind of year it was SKIERS!
