The fire was about a quarter mile from outlying homes, which were buffered by damp vegetation of Santa Paula Creek. Some 600 firefighters struggled on both fronts of the fire through the night as the toll of charred land grew to 3,000 acres, said William Waltrip of the U.S. Forest Service. After meeting for more than 16 hours at Ford headquarters in suburban Dearborn, the bargainers broke off their talks at 3:15 a.m., ending hopes that they were engaged in a round-the-clock discussions which would herald an agreement on a 25,000 acres in another part of Ventura County. 60 Homes Burn The Los Angeles County Fire Department estimated that fire destroyed 43 homes in Los Angeles County and 17 in Ventura County. No control was in sight for the Santa Paula fire, Waltrip said. "It's not looking too good at all.

We had a kickup in the wind overnight and the fire's backing down to Santa Paula Creek," he said. On the other front, firefighters strained to keep the flames from timber stands. From 500 to 600 acres of brush in. the national forest were consumed, Waltrip said. Meanwhile, three teenagers were held for investigation of arson in a series of fires which have burned acres about 25 miles to the southwest.
