City Forces To Install 49 New Fire Hydrants The City Council yesterday considered contractors' bids for the installation of 49 fire hydrants in the newly annexed area, but decided to let city forces do the job instead. City Mgr. Porter W.

Homer told the councilmen that the lowest bid for the job was $17,035 which figures out to about $347.59 per hydrant. He said city workers could do the job for about $100 each. Homer explained that this figure included the cost of materials, rental equipment and manpower, but did not include any city overhead costs. Then will come a trip by the jury to key scenes involved in the slaying. Hover and Hopkins used only nine of a venire of 75 yesterday to seat four women and two men on the jury tentatively. Nearly 20 others were excused automatically for business, health or hardship reasons. Throughout the sweltering four- hour court session, Mrs. Klumpp sat grim-faced.

She rarely spoke with her attorneys. Before the session began, she appeared to be near tears a couple of times as photographers snapped pictures. When the court adjourned, she said, "I feel better now." She added that she was "terribly upset" when the trial started. The prosecution made that each prospective juror accepted had no objections to imposing capital punishment. The Council also voted to vacate a stretch of the alley running from 1st to 2nd street just west of Stone avenue. The land will be sold to the Caravan Inn so that the proposed motel to be constructed there can run back from Stone avenue nearly to 9th avenue. The city will sell the land for $5,251.22, then pay some of the money back to the motel firm for enough land at the side of the motel site for a turn-around area.

The city will net about $3,500 on the deal. A part of the transaction calls for the motel firm to indemnify the city as a protection against lawsuits resulting from the vacation of the alley.
