9 09 Hawks Win but Lakers Confident By HALSEY HALL Minneapolis Star Staff Writer The wires today are carrying the story of: a wreck. The train of coincidence was derailed and smashed Thursday night coming into its Minneapolis Armory depot. The St. Louis Hawks downed the Lakers 117-96 to square the series at 3-3 and today a few aftermaths are evident. The startling repetition of 1959 that found the Lakers breaking through in overtime in the fifth game at St.

Louis, failed to continue. Last year they took the sixth one here and won the Western championship. Investigation discloses that the wreck came against boulders on the track; boulders of cold viciousness, confidence and desire. That is the reason by the Hawks' Larry Foust, Celts Wait for West From the Star Sports Wires PHILADELPHIA, Boston Celtics relaxed today, waiting for Minneapolis and St. Louis to settle their Western division playoff in the National Basketball association.

The 32-year-old Canadian, a combination defenseman, wing and railway worker, believes there is such a thing as getting "too fired up." The rest of the Minneapolis team is younger in age and experience than St. Paul. The Millers and Saints clash at 8 tonight in the Arena in the second of their -seven playoff for the International league's Western title. "Hunchuk is a tremendous asset to our club," Miller coach Bob May said. "He played wing and defense for us in the 2-0 win over St.

Paul Tuesday. He keeps his head when things get tough." May gave the Millers a short scrimmage Thursday "because they, were getting too pent The players eagerly agree they want to beat St. Paul to show they can do it i in spite of the roughhouse play of the Saints. "If you get too fired up, you start to forget Hunchuk said. "These guys hustle all the time.

That's good as long as they don't get too excited. I haven't played wing for years, but I enjoyed it and I'll do it again if necessary. Defense is my position. I'm glad to come STOCKHOLDERS GOT After the Lakers had broken through for their first victory at St. Louis last week, president Bob Short cracked: "This helps.

Now we're going home and play for the stockholders." Built-in ing game will be played Saturday afternoon, not at familiar Kiel auditorium in St. Louis, but on the floor of Washington U. The Lakers feel confident this will at least make things even in nullifying any home court advantage. But Macauley says his men have played there before. The silence in the Laker quarters was ready for a knife to cut it.

Not a sharp knife, either. Coach Jim Pollard closed the door for a moment for a heart to heart talk. Opening it he said: "We let them play their game. You can't do that with Hawks. They're too good a ball club; they're a great ball club.

You've got to make them play yours. You can't take them lightly." It was St. Louis from the start, even though only 56-51 at the half. But then the Hawks developed a fondness for 13-point leads and kept them. Time after time that margin stood at 13.

Hundreds of the 7,544 crowd hit for the exits with three minutes to go. Clyde Lovellette was superb with 29 points, Cliff Hagan ditto. Bob Pettit, finally enjoying a periodic rest as Macauley seized the chance to take him out, finished with 30. Now--one to go. St.

They did. The 7,544 on hand Thursday night was the largest crowd ever to watch the Lakers in the Armory.
