31 In three lightning strokes, the first when the game was but one minute old. Clemson's rebounding Tigers turned George Washington's home-coming into a Halloween nightmare this evening by downing the Colonials 19 to 0 before a possible audience of 6,000 folks who sought the shelter of the roofed grandstands to evade a fickle drizzle. Booty Payne, ineffective on the majority of his runs for the night, hit with a couple of haymaker punches in the pinches to score two Tiger touchdowns while tackle George Fritts entered the scoring column for the second time this year with the Tigers' initial score. FRITTS OPENS SCORING On the fourth play of the game with Colonial Gudmundson back to kick on his own 22 yard line, George Fritts smashed his way through protecting linemen to block the game's first kick, race on to pick it up on the six yard line, and step without hindrance into the end zone. And right there the ball game settled down to a kicking war between Clemson's Booty Payne and Sid Tinsley and George Washington's Scott Gudmundson and Jimmy Graham. It lasted until one minute remained to be played in the third quarter.

until mid-way of the second period when Asheville scored. The count was 6-6 at the half. The Maroons came back after intermission and on two straight drives tallied six-pointers and handed the Raiders their fourth straight defeat. Greenville kicked off to open the ball game with Collins booting to Penland who carried the oval back to the Asheville 35 before he was halted by a mass of Red Raiders. HV-The South Carolina Gamecocks came out on the long end of a 13-6 score over the Citadel today after the Light Brigade optplayed them most of the way and almost pulled the game out of the fire in the final period. A capacity crowd of 10,000 sitting under a harsh sun, saw the teams return to the Orangeburg County Fair for the 34th game in the long series. The game had not been played here since 1937. There were much offensive fireworks, but the defense overshadowed all and neither team gained much yardage. The Light Brigade, holding the Gamecocks to a net of only 29 yards from scrimmage, held the edge in the statistics except In yards gained by passing.

BIRDS STRIKE VIA AIR The first period was a stand-off a the opposing fullbacks, Andy Victory of the Citadel and Ken Reside of Carolina engaged in a long punting dueL The Gamecocks struck swiftly and suddenly midway the second Quarter for their first touchdown. With the ball on the Carolina 33, Al Grygo passed 17 yards to Tommy Attaway and on the next play De-witt Arrowsmith shot one over the middle to quarterback Early Dunham, who sidestepped the safety man and raced to the goal The play was good for 49 yards. Mike Patrone, a substitute who went in to try for the extra point, saw his first placement attempt blocked but he made good when given a second chance by a Citadel offside penalty. The Gamecocks threatened again almost at once after recovering a Citadel fumble but Mike Newell Intercepted a Grygo pass in his end zone. Starting the second half, The Citadel came out with a rush and pounded out two successive first downs but had to punt, Hank Sal-vato, the Citadel's triple threat who was back in the game after a first period injury, kicking to Roskie on the Carolina 25.

ROSKIE'S GREAT RUN The big fullback gathered in the ball, eluded one tackier and went 72 yards down the sidelines before Victor slapped him out of bounds on the Citadel three. He hit the line for two more and Stan Stas-Ica, sophomore flash, went over right tackle for the score. Patrone failed to add the extra point. Then came the game's most startling play. Carolina kicked off and Salvato tore hack 88 yards.

It seemed he would fo all the way for a touchdown but Roskie knocked him out of bounds at the six yard stripe. The Gamecocks braced and took the ball inches from their line after Salvato and Gold gained only one yard in three attempts. Salvato's peg to Doug Keirstead was barely Bhort. They punted out of danger momentarily but the Light Brigade Scoop Latimer, Greenville (S. News: "Duke over Georgia Tech.

Then Hunter took the ball on a reverse and scored standing. Horton converted. The visitors, intent on evening things up, threatened twice in the second period, advancing first to the Seceders 25 and bogging downf there, and then after a subsequent punt exchange going to the Erskine 22. TEACHERS RALLY Soon after the third period opened, the North Carolinians, taking the ball at midfield, to Erskin'e 25. There Teague passed to Green, who lateraled to Brown for the score.

Marriott placeklcked the noint, and the score was tied. After staving off an Erskine threat early in the fourth on their own 15, the Teachers got up to Erskine's 22 on a punt then pushed to the 12. With seconds to play, Teague faded back and passed to Green in the end zone for the winning touchdown and Marriott again converted. E. C.
