citizens, organized and financed a Greenville franchise in the South Carolina State league, and from that organ zation sprang Green ville's venture in the Carolina association of which Mr. Wells and his friends were the founders. Through the years Mr. Wells maintained a lively interest in good clean, wholesome sports, and, umtil he was forced to bed a few days ago, was in regular attendance at Sally league and textile baseball games. Football, hunting and fishing were also dear to his heart.

He loved the outdoors. Mr Wells was a friend without an enemy and a man without a flaw. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family In Its bereavement. ADVOCATES REVIVAL OF TENNIS INTEREST IN TENNIS, as a participating sport and also from the spectator's standpoint, is increasing by leaps and bounds. But Greenville, the cradle of this recreation and pastime in the Carolinas, is lagging in the continued development of the court game.

A tennis tournament, to be sponsored by the City Recreation department, may give impetus to a movement to revive the sport which in its heydey here blossomed out with the Carolinas tournament. Dixon F. Pearce, prominent young Greenville business man, civic leader and sportsman, come to bat, rather to the net, with good suggestions which are embodied in a communication we take delight in printing, as follows: "Dear Scoop: "I believe that there is a good opportunity for another major sport in Greenville that I feel will appeal to you. Tennis! Greenville was a tennis center several years ago until our leading tennis players retired from active play. "Today there are a lot of youngsters from ten to eighteen years old who would be interested in playing tennis who have never had the opportunity of seeing fair tennis, let alone good tennis played, and have had no way of learning the fundamentals of the game.

"The Greenville Country Club has six courts that are in fair condition and several others that have never been completely finished. Recently, the Club authorized a 'family membership for a reasonable fee, permitting all the immediate members of a family the full privileges of the Club. A number of the regular members have taken these "family memberships and many more would if the attraction's to their sons and daughters were sufficient. "I believe that if arrangements could be made to have a competent tennis coach at the club that a large number of our grammar school and high school boys and girls would go in for tennis in a big way and that within a few years we would have a large crop of good tennis players In Greenville, with possibly some high ranking amateurs and see tennis another major sport In this city. "The University of North Carolina is turning out some splendid tennis players due to having a fine coach, and in California where there are a number of fine tennis teachers, they are developing champions.
