Daugherty claims 20 per cent of the Spartan attack is new each year. "Last year we put in the unbalanced line slot back formation and ai flock of new trap plays.

We have a lot of new stuff this 1 year, too." But on that new stuff Daugherty maintains silence. Incidentally, Mr. Variable and Mr. Split-T (Warmath) have broken even so far. Duffy's Spartans won two one-sided victories over the Gophers at East Lansing.

But at Memorial stadium War- math engineered a pair of nip-tuck upsets by 19-13 in 1954 and 14-13 in '56. Big question at the state baseball tournament here today was just how long ironman Jim Lawler of Austin can hold out. When the right-handed hurler eliminated the Minneapolis Cozys from the class A double elimination Thursday night 9-3 it was his third appearance on the mound since last Saturday, or 25 innings of work in six days. The question comes up since Austin faces St.

Paul Park at 8:30 tonight for the right to meet Little Falls for the championship at 1 p.m. Sunday. It's possible Manager Emil Scheid will give youthful Bill Walsh, the former St. Paul Cretin athlete and now a student at Carleton college a chance against St. Paul Park with an idea of saving Lawler for the finals game, if possible.

Lake 51. 66C8 Lyndale So. wow i By DICK GORDON Minneapolis Star Staff Writer While Murray Warmath and his Gophers are working hard to perfect their split-T attack, here is startling news from another Big Ten football campus: At Michigan State Duffy Daugherty has junked his multiple offense! Don't get the wrong idea.

Duffy is not going to be so' simnle as to switch to a single stereotyped formation. Instead of the multiple he'll use the "variable offense." That phrase Nan- Daugherty was coined by Daugherty himself, so let the verbose Inshman explain it in his own words. "The term 'multiple' no longer adequately describes our system," says the Spartan coach. "At least not in contrast to other systems. Almost everyone uses some kind of multiple offense today.

Improved defenses have forced just about every Austin's title hopes alive, he had to yield honors to Little Falls' Virg Deering last night. The 22-year-old Little Falls lefty who leaves 'for army service on Monday pitched his team into the finals with a magnificent one hit, 9-0 victory over St. Paul Park. DEERING ALSO fanned 11. Austin scored a run without a hit in the first inning off John Freund of the Cozys who pitched the distance but the Cozys managed to tie it up in the second.

Then Austin put on a winning three run rally in the third as Bob Mathias led off with a double and two walks, two sacrifices, an error and Ray Rosenbaum's single followed. FIRMAN JANSKE doubled in a pair of runs in the fourth to put the Cozys in contention again but Lawler blanked the Minneapolis team the rest of the way. Meanwhile Austin, to insure its triumph, got a single, ton in the sixth and closed out any Cozy hopes with four runs in the eighth, two of them tallying on Frank Brown's rousing triple. Dick Cordell had three of Austin's 10 hits. Austin is 2-1 going into tonight game and St.

FRANK HOWARD, former Ohio State athlete now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has played but two pro baseball games yet he's being touted as the man who might break Babe Ruth's homer record.

But there are some who question its cost and application. In Minnesota the budget of the bureau of research in the conservation department has more than doubled from 1953 through 1957.
