Nov. 6, 1980 3D Minneapolis Tribune Deitz resigns as coach of St. Thomas football Dick Cullum GOLF CENTER 0 St. Paul Bloomington Lyndale at 88th 884-8206 Larpenteur Snellmg 647-0233646-9155 St Thomas football Coach DuWayne Deitz, the coach of the year in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season, announced Wednesday that he would resign, effective after the Tommies' season-ending game at SL John's on Saturday. Deitz led the Tommies, to two co-championships in the MIAC.

The first came in the 1973, when the Tommies won six of seven conference games. The second came last year, when the Tommies were 6-2. In addition to the MIAC honor, Dietz was named coach of the year last year in District 13 of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. St Thomas has a 3-5-1 over-all record this year and is seventh in the MIAC with a 2-4-1 mark. Deitz, 50, will continue teaching at St.

Thomas as a member of the physical education faculty. He also will continue to serve as assistant men's track coach. "I've been thinking about giving up football for some time," he said. "It's time I turned over the job to some- DuWayne Deitz They are paid to do their jobs and take the consequences. Should a coach do a friendly coach a favor by trying less hard when he has a safe lead? What about the players? A college player has only one career.

This kid has earned his place on the team. He is the best player at his position. He has the right to show his ability before bis girlfriend, his parents and brothers and sisters. Graduation may be near. It has seemed a short career.

Should he have to sit on the bench because his coach wants to do a friend across the field a favor by holding the score down? The game is not for the coaches. They will be at work for many seasons. The game is for the players. If they are good enough to play, they should play their allotted time. So, you see, there are conflicting aspects in this matter of pouring it on.

I'd like to start spending more time with my wife and family." Delta's collegiate coaching record, all at St Thomas, is 52-51-2. He began at St. Thomas in 1970 after coaching high school football at White Bear Lake and Marshall-University. Frank Mach, athletic director, said, "I reluctantly accept his resignation. I' understand and respect his reason for stepping down." BSSBm The word "crucial" comes popping out again, as in Detroit Lions vs.

Min-! nesota Vikings in Metropolitan Stadi-- urn Sunday. The Lions are in front in the NFC Central Division. They would be fa-. vorltes against any team in the divl-. sion.

But I think the Vikings have had this game in mind since their defeat in the Silverdome six weeks ago. It will be a game in which an aroused underdog will play beyond its normal capabilities. Even before their victory at Washington the Vikings were thinking about the Lions. It will be the Big Game for the Vikings, and I think they will win it. But it won't be an upset.

Instead, it will be an on-a-given-day game in which the less regarded team should be the favorite. This week the fickle fans have become coaches, which is fun. They have taken sides in deciding whether Steve Dils or Tommy Kramer should be the Vikings quarterback. Dils is getting strong support because of his success against Washington. But the fans have forgotten that Kramer per-.

formed similar feats in his first season of regular duty last year. My friend Ray Scott recalls Bart Starr's career. Scott broadcast all the games that Starr quarterbacked for the Green Bay Packers. "Starr had hard going for nearly five years before he finally found his real skills," Scott said. "Earlier his performance was at times really bad.

But, given time, he became a Hall of Fame quarterback." Norm Van Brocklin, himself a Hall of Fame quarterback, once said the same thing, "For years, the Packers carried Starr; after that Starr carried 'the Packers." Kramer is halfway through his second year of service. Give him time. There's no substitute for experience in this league. Pour it on The rating systems in college football in which the news services select the top 10 or 20 teams tempt some coaches to go for high scores once they have opponents on the run. Coaches are accused of pouring it on to win better places in the polls.

The fault lies with the voters, sports-writers in the Associated Press poll and coaches in the United Press International poll. After a team has gone, let's say, three touchdowns ahead, additional points should be ig- nored as proving nothing. So much for coach against coach.
