"It's, just a matter of getting some progress or canceling out," said Rep. Robert L. F. Sikes (D, But Sikes, a ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee that called the MET 70 "overly sophisticated, unnecessarily complex and too expensive;" said Congress is unlikely, to scrap the tank because of the present investment of $303 million.

The Army announced it hopes ultimately to cut costs $200,000 per tank by eliminating or revising' unspecified components. It says the MET 70 is needed- to counter the Soviet tank threat in Europe. Deputy Secretary of Defense David Packard said joint U.S.- West German development of the tank, blamed by congressional critics as a leading cause of delays, will be virtually ended each country developing the tank on its own. Pentagon sources have variously estimated the present cost at to $800,000 per tank. The students pelted Thurmond again with marshmallows when he rose to answer, questions from the students.

He was allowed to complete his answers and the meeting ended with no further incidents. Thurmond had stopped his speech several times when hecklers yelled at him but each time they permitted him to continue.
