Anderson Figures Industrial Impact On County Shown By NEWS STAFF WRITER ANDERSON In connection with the current drive to raise $250,000 for the construction of a building for a new industry, the Chamber of Commerce assembled figures regarding the first such project by the citizens of Anderson, to show what it called the impact of one industry on the economy of the city and county. The people of Anderson invested about $150,000 in the building which is occupied by Haynes-worth Mill. Shares of stock were $100 each.

For each $100 invested the investors received their $100 back at the end of four years, with $30 in interest paid during the four years. Dick Meeks, in giving the figures, said that the return to the investors was small in comparison to the return to the community at large. When the plant opened, around 100 persons were employed, he said. The plant has expanded three times, and the present employment is approximately 375, operating six days a week. In the 12 years since the plant began operating, it paid out 500,000 in payrolls, $1,100,000 in taxes and $3,850,000 for supplies, much of which was bought from Anderson firms, Mr.

Meeks said. Mr. Meeks said people of Anderson and Starr invested around $100,000 in the plant for the Starr Mills. Employment has increased from 100 to more than 300. Investors received their full investment plus six per cent interest.

Since the plant began operations in 1954, it has paid out approximately $10,000,000 in payrolls, more than $40,000 in county taxes (new plants are exempted from all except school taxes for the first five years), and large sums have been spent for supplies, much of which was purchased from Anderson County firms.
