The Freaek Lleatenaat' Woman Meryl Streep as the Jilted woman of the John Fowlea novel, who stands on the English coastline waiting for ber "lover" to return.

Director Xarel Relsz and screenwriter Harold Pinter Inject a contrapuntal modern story Involving the actors who are making the film their equivalent of the aside Fowle employed (WJ). R. I Galllpoll-An Australian film based on the Allied attempt to Invade Turkey and gain control of the Dardanelles during World War I a campaign in which thousands of Australian troops were slaughtered. But It's not so much a war film as It Is a going-to-war film, celebrating the patriotic fervor that seized young Australian men to volunteer for a distant war (WJ). PG.

Looker A silly, senseless, beautles-ln-jeopardy concoction, thoroughly riddled with plot holes and gaps In logic, but it can be fun If you just go along with the gags. And writerdirector Michael Crichton does have a funny mind (WJ). PG. Mommle Dearest The world's longest detergent commercial, focusing on Joan Crawford's aversion to dirt. If you know the horror stories of the book, written by Crawford's adopted daughter, the film will hold few surprises, except how they managed to make It so boring for more than two hours (BL).

PG. Only When I Laugh It's Nell Simon's "Gingerbread Lady," his tunny-sad play about the trials of an alcoholic singer. Marsha Mason and Krlsty McNichol are the nominal stars, but James Coco as an out-of-work homosexual actor steals the show with an Oscar-level performance (BL). R. He's a bachelor with sudden yearnings for fatherhood without marriage, of course. Beverly D'Angelo plays a waitress who gets the job. Even Reynolds's admirers may have trouble stifling a yawn (WJ). PG. Priest ol Love The last years of the much-banned, much-traveled D.

H. Lawrence and his German wife, Frieda. The film tries to make him a Christ figure, complete with a betrayer, but be comes off mostly as a petulant, occasionally vicious bastard who happens to write books for a living (BL). Despite the title, its sex scenes are mild and Its language chaste. Rated but closer to PG.

Prince of the City Sidney Lu-met's update of police corruption, but more subtle, less black-and-white. This time the cop who blows the whistle (Treat Williams) Is himself steeped In corruption. Almost three hours long but engrossing throughout (BL). R. Raiders of the Lest Ark Steven Spielberg and George Lucas recreate the adventure serials of the 1930s, complete with Nazi villains, but there's a big difference: Despite all the sandstorms, shootouts and snakes, we don't really care much what happens to the hero (Harrison Ford) (WJ).

PG. Rich and Famous George Cukor's remake of "Old Acquaintance," the 1943 Bette Davls-MIr-lam Hopkins hair-puller about schoolgirl chums who become novelists by different routes. Can-dice Bergen plays a housewifemother who starts writing In her spare time, Jacqueline Bisset Is the dedicated career woman who suffers for her art. It's like "The Turning Point" without the tutus, except that It's too, too (BL). R.

Southern Comfort "Lost Patrol" meets "Deliverance" in this saga of a band of national guardsmen lost In the Louisiana swamp and pursued by vengeful Cajuns. The story Is farfetched, but the photography Is eerily beautiful (BL). R. Stevle The life of Stevie Smith, the English poet and novelist. Is explored down to Its last domestic detail.

The acting by Glenda Jackson isns unday, November 22, at 7o clock. Tickets are $10.50 and $9.50, available! nenn-e Association ol America. Arthur That rarest of rarities, an old-fashioned comedy comedy. The title character (Dudley Moore), the world's richest drunk, must marry a dull patrician to get his Inheritance, but he's smitten by true love when he sees Liza Minnelll shoplifting at Bergdorfs. The script Is brilliant, most of all when the lines are being uttered by John Clelgud as Arthur's butler (WJ).

R. Body Heat-Wtlllam Hurt and newcomer Kathleen Turner stale as a couple who plot to kill her husband for the Insurance. It's a familiar story with some huge boles, but director Lawrence Kasdan, until now only a writer, brings it off. R. First Monday In October Timely but as stimulating as a civics lesson, despite the presence of Jill Clayburgh and Walter Matthau.

She's the first woman to sit on the Supreme Court, he's a liberal curmudgeon modeled after Justice Douglas. They argue a lot but eventually grow to appreciate the other's view.
