He was 78 and lived in Darby, Delaware County. Farrant was raised Port Richmond and graduated from Northeast Catholic High School for Boys, said his nephew, the by Marianne Costantinou Staff Writer A. Farrant, a bepriest who genuthe company of Farrant Rev. James J. Farrant.

He was ordained in 1940, and for the next three decades served as a pastor at a half-dozen churches and schools. "He was a saint," said his nephew. "I do believe it." Farrant taught at South Catholic High (later renamed St. John Neumann High School for Boys) in the 1940s. While a teacher, he lived at St.

Edmond Church, where he was later named an associate pastor. Every year while at St. Edmond's, Farrant took the Boy Scouts on a weeklong camping trip, and on jamborees across the country. His next assignment was St. John the Baptist Church, where he was the director of the Catholic Youth Organization and the 150-member, all-boys' choir.

But he is best remembered by parishioners for the two-week trips that he took to the shore and to the mountains with some of the junior and senior high boys many of whom were fatherless or living in a single-family home. One of the boys who went on these trips was Bill "Speedy" Morris, head basketball coach at La Salle University, whose father passed away when he was 13. In a 1993 tribute he wrote for the Daily News, Morris credited Farrant with giving him his first coaching job with the church's youth basketball team. Farrant, he said, "was like a second father." After St. John's, Farrant was assigned to St.

Matthew's, where he organized a Catholic Youth Organization and founded the Men of St. Matthew's, a men's social group. His last assignment, in 1968, was the Most Precious Blood Church. At each of his churches, Farrant used humor and compassion to inspire the young people in his care, said his nephew. He often brought them home for dinner at his mother's house for a homemade Irish meal.

Blessed with a tremendous memory, he could remember the names of virtually every child he had met, and what they had talked about. A tall man, Farrant used to love to wear a big black cape, and kids, taken with his reverie, would, BEVAN March 18, 1995, FLORENCE J.
