Could Rice translate her magic from a written to a visual medium? Did Hollywood have the proper amount of reverence for the material? Happily, yes on all counts, beginning with a fantastic production design that's all jsewers, swamps and shadows. In other words, welcome to colonial and present-day New Orleans, and a tale that finds a weary vampire named Louis (Pitt) telling a cynical reporter (Christian Slater) his life story in a hotel room. He takes us back to New Orleans circa 1791, where he's a widowed plantation owner seduced to the dark side by the social climbing Lestat, an ancient creature equal parts pretension and rage.

To coax compelling cinema from such prose you need one thing more: actors who can make the darkest contrivances credible. Enter "Interview with the Vampire," which works overtime to unnerve you. Its video release is Tuesday. And it largely succeeds, thanks to the sure, steady hand of director Neil Jordan, a palpable script by horror doyenne Anne Rice, and turns by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt that are deliciously up to the task.

A good thing, too, for "Vampire" has cultivated millions of readers since it was first published in the mid 70s, and there's nothing quite so picky as an Anne Rice fan. (Mention the arrival of a new Rice novel and bookstores brace themselves.) Woody White North "Snuffy" Walden, look to his laurels! Tonight's "Due South" at last explains Fraser's longstanding emotional isolation: He's haunted by the memory of a woman he deeply loved and whom he believes he deeply wronged.

It was eight years ago and Victoria (Melina Kanakaredes) was on the lam from an Alaska bank job. Her plane went down in the Frozen North. Fraser tracked her into the teeth of a Yukon blizzard, saved her life, fell in love with her then sent her to prison. Is it any wonder he's a little conflicted? It doesn't help that the beautiful Kanakaredes could make Sgt. Preston write sonnets to her parole board.

Victoria is not just Fraser's forbidden candy; she has crept into his soul and sunk her hooks. Haggis illustrates Fraser's turmoil with a snow-filled memory dream that is as haunting and poetic as it is surreal. That snowfall motif winds through the story, uniting and fulfilling it. CBS, which orphaned the series against NBC's dreadnought Thursdays, still has not officially canceled "Due South," which ended the season tied for 54th with "Beverly Hills, 90210," "Love War" and "seaQuest DSV." The network is considering "Due South" as a midseason replacement, should it perform well in its new time slot tonight and in the next two weeks. PajdProg.

"When I got bored with the tone of the last week's episode, I'd decide to do a dark one." Dark is unquestionably the mood of tonight's two-hour movie, directed by Haggis from a script he co-wrote with David Shore. "We were in the middle of shooting it and CBS told me they wanted two more episodes!" said "L.A. Law" veteran Haggis, a writer-producer for "thirtysome-thing" in its first year. Dark comedy DUE SOUTH. Tonight at 9, Ch. 10. by Scott Williams Associated Press NEW YORK Don't miss "Due South" tonight. CBS's eccentric comedy of a handsome, straight-arrow Mount-ie fighting crime in Chicago has come up with one of the year's best suspense dramas.

It's sexy, smart and guaranteed to keep you 'guessing. Surprised? You're entitled. "Due South" was written off as this past season's one-joke series, i.e., Dudley Doright as "McCloud," a crime-buster who rescues kittens in trees and tells the streetwalkers he's not ready for a serious relationship just now. Assigned to consular duties in Chicago, Mountie Benton Fraser (Paul Gross) makes miserable his cynical, street-wise police detective overseer (David Marciano). Thus "Due South." The hitch is, that wasn't quite the whole picture.

Viewers who stuck with "Due South" quickly learned the series was given to unpredictable, sometimes violent, mood swings. Instead of endless Canadian jokes, comic pursuits and lurid villainy undone by the last commercial, "Due South" sometimes would lean toward a kinky, monochromatic tincture of black edy. -and- moral ambiguity.
