Famiy prefers donations to Fox Nursing Center, 2644 Bristol Rtt, Warrington, Pa. bv Jim Nicholson Doily News Staff Writer Reba Dickerson-Hill, a retired schoolteacher and an artist whose work is in international collections and is best known for her paintings in the ancient Eastern style of Sumi-e, died Monday. She was 75 and lived in Mount Airy. Dickerson-Hill, whose work is in collections in the University of Exeter in England and Esterhavy Palace in Austria, worked in an unforgiving medium and style, Sumi-e, which dates back to 590 A.D. when it was introduced in Japan.

It is basically black paint on white background and is characterized by simple, elegant lines. Her teacher was a Spanish diplomat, Ramon Fina, whom she met in Philadelphia when she was a young girl. Primarily a watercolorist, though she worked in other mediums, Dickerson-Hill's work was among those of other prominent black artists which were exhibited in January 1992 in a 42-piece collection at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Her daughter, Reba Mayo, said her mnthpr "was Tmlv a rhilrl of the universe, somehow connected to something most people can't touch. She was one of those artists who had to be, not because she wanted to be.

She was compelled to be focused on her work." Mayo, who also was an artist and later managed her mother's career, said her mother's work, "is a compelling combination of strengths and delicacies in her treatment of people and nature. Her unique interpretations have taken an unusual variety of forms and formats." She said that in the past two years her mother did a series of paintings on ceramic tile of native peoples of Africa and the flora of North America. Dickerson-Hill retired from teaching in the late 1960s. Her last school was Claghorn Elementary at 17th Street and Susquehanna Avenue. She enjoyed teaching, said her daughter.

"She was one of those people who believe in staying where you are needed, and she did." Raised in West Philadelphia, Dickerson-Hill graduated from Overbrook High School and received her degree from Cheyney University, where she later taught as an assistant professor of fine arts. She did graduate art studies at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University and the Barnes Foundation. A quiet but strong-willed and generous woman, Dickerson-Hill loved reading and classical music, especially the works of Bach and Mozart, said her daughter. "She had a sense of humor and was a terrific tease and loved surprises," said Mayo. "She was like a little kid like that." Dickerson-Hill was a life member and member of the board of "the Philadelphia Watercolor Club and the Sumi-e Society of America.

Among her citations are a National Design Award, two prizes from the Sumi-e Society and an Andrew Wyeth watercolor award She is in a Japanese encyclopedia of Sumi-e artists and Who's Who in the East, 1992-93 edition. Survivors also include her husband of 53 years, Harold W. Hill two sons, Harold Jr. and Allan a sister, Edith Collins; a brother, Robert Dickerson; and a grandson, Brandon Hill. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m.

Sunday at Summit Presbyterian Church, Green and West-view streets. Contributions may be made to the Urban Services Fund of Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). Lisa A. Harris Lisa A. Harris, a medical assistant and favorite among neighborhood children, died Tuesday of respiratory failure.

She was 25 and lived in Germantown. Harris had been a medical assistant at the Wayne Medical Pavilion at Wayne Avenue and Armat Street. She had previously been a medical assistant at the Wayne Medical Center at Wayne Avenue Harris and Seymour Street. "She was one of the sweetest young ladies you'd ever want to meet," said Jacqueline Swinton, a friend, and captain of the 200 block of W. Seymour St.

"You'd just be sitting on the step and she'd come up and sit with you and talk to you. When she'd come home from work, the smaller kids would see her and say, 'Lisa, take us to the 'Lisa, give me some Lisa would stop and do it She had been a babysitter for a lot of kids on the block. Now, she's takin' care of kids in Heaven. She's beautiful." Mark Harris, one of her brothers, said she enjoyed being around people and helping them. He also said she enjoyed her work and going to parties.

Harris, who suffered from asthma since the age of 16, was a 1986 graduate of Dobbins Vocational High School and a member of Bright Hope Baptist Church. Survivors include her parents, Vetalene and Philip Harris; three brothers, Philip Anthony and Mark; her grandmother, Ruth Fuller; and close companion, Howard Roberts. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bright Hope Baptist Church, 12th Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, where friends may call one hour before.
