PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS Vage 33 Monday. July .31. 1989 Jsison Sfics iEi BSs A srgtrass Teddy Bear Back in By Gary Thompson Daily News Staff Writer Start spreadin' the news Bogeymen Jason Voorhees is off to see if he can hack it in the Big Apple, in "Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan." And so, Crystal Lake, with your hundred-odd mutilated teen-age camp counselors, we bid you adieu. But not before Jason graciously pays homage to his celebrated past by killing two fornicating adolescents with a speargun. It's classic Jason.

"What's wrong?" the girl asks, interrupting foreplay. "Nothing it's just that we're anchored right next to the camp where all those murders occured," her boyfriend replies. Seconds later, of course, they're crab bait. Jason commandeers their boat. Friday the 13th Part VIII Jason Takes Manhattan Produced by Randolph Cheveldave, directed by Rob Heddert, music by Fred Mollin, written by Rob Hedden, distributed by Paramount Pictures.

A few people manage to escape to New York in a boat. Jason pursues them, using the aquatic technique he perfected while spending his formative years at the bottom of Crystal Lake. He pursues the survivors through the alleys and streets and subways of New York. The joke is that in New York, the largest gathering place for weirdos on the East Coast, Jason is just one of the crowd. "You don't understand," one lad says to an indifferent waitress.

"There is a maniac trying to kill us." "Welcome to New York," she replies. The movie is gory and conventional, but the change of scenery and occasional dashes of humor make this one, well, a cut above the others in this uninspired series. Things have been sizzling at Kajem, perhaps Philly's No.

1 studio at the moment. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince just finished an album for Jive Records that's due out in September. One song, I hear, is a tribute to the 93-second man, Mike Tyson. Earlier, the studio recorded the ready-to-break Russian band Gorky Park, whose first album, also titled "Gorky Park," is due out next month. Gorky Park, Regular Readers will recall, is the band that's getting assistance from local rockers Bon JovL When the Glasnost Goys were in the studio, something funny happened.

No matter how hard they'd try to sound Amer-icanski, they came out sounding like Steve Martin's wild and crazy East STU BYKOFSKY ern European guy. To capture the American OXcent, Kajem partner Kurt Shore, a musician himself, sang "guide vocals," which Gorky's lead singer, Nikolai Noskov, mimicked. Alpha Rising Alpha International Record Company has been formed by Joe Tarsia, founder of Sigma Sound Studios; Pete Pelullo, founder of Alpha International Recording Studio; and Tony: Bongiovi, owner of Power Station Studios in New York First artist to sign with the company, located on Delaware Avenue, is Jodi Bongiovi, whose self-titled album hits the stores Aug. 26. A single from the album, a remake of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love," goes on sale tomorrow.

Jodi is, yes, Jon Bon Jovi's first cousin. Alpha partner Tony is Jon's second cousin. Mary Is Crafty Newly anointed WCAU (AM1210) yapper Mary Mason is pretty crafty. As I reported last week, a number of politicians called in to congratulate her on her first day on the air. What you didnt know until now was that Mary hired the Wilburne Associates PR firm to phone various politicians at City Hall to suggest they might want to call in.

Wilburne's Francine Cheeks, a for-mer Channel 10 reporter, couldnt remember just how many calls she made in order to ensure Mary got lots of calls from influential people. Did Mary's bosses at WCAU know 1 about this little trick? They do now.
