Ccktib, the nominee for Asseui-Myinan in the First Disrriet, is a gen-tluinau of sterling worth. One incident in his history will illustrate his character. When the rebellion broke out he determined to go into the service of his country. He was then a clerk in the Scool Land Department. A man of ability, culture, a graduate of Harvard, and in all respects well fitted for a position, than higher private in the ranks, his friends sought to have him obtain a commission.

He had but to signify that ho would accept such a place, and he would have received it. But he refused, declaring that there were enough ready to go as officers, end he believed he could best serve his country at that time by taking a musket. So Mr. Cuk-tis, by his own voluntary choice, and impelled only by the patriotic impulses of his heart, resigned an easy and pleasant office, and with his musket on his shoulder marched to the front. He served in the ranks through the war, declining all promotion, doing his duty in that capacity cheerfully and well, seeking no noteriety and making no virtue of his magnanimous refusal of office.

The people of Browtt County will do themselves a greater honor than they will do Mr. Curtis by choosing him to be their repsesentative. Dr. Ayres was a member of the last Legislature. Heis an old citizen of the State, and a man of ability and infrn- G.
