The uifhfc scbswl wkiob optisd en tLe of Novsasber 8ii not bo well fatronieeJ this jsar as it was last. TL 1 ehool began tboat a week earlier this teaeon ani the employment of large nwberg of men by the Water Work Company has operated to keep the at tendance in the evening school low, After working bard all day in the eold the mind ia in no condition for efficisn work in the school room for two boar tech evening and scarcely an attempt is made by boys eutrazed in that work to Inter the night achooL The uttendauce thus fur baa averaged between fifty and atiity pupils. Last year the enrollniit included over a handted. The only additional restriction this (eaten upon candidate-, for admission to the night acbool it that none wbo with draw from the day school will be reeeiv ed at the evening seesiou. No inch cum hare yet occurred this fall bat lust year there were several, who, upon the open ing of the night ichool, withdrew from the day ichool to work and depended upon the evening session for thur ichool- ling.

The sohool is now conducted by Mrs, J. M. Shoemacbtr, and 0. C. Rodolph Unless the attendance increases it i f.rob able that the two classes will be con olidated and plaoed under one teacher.

Am now organized this department of the public school system of the eity ia well equipped tor doing good work. It ia not crowded and every faoility in afforded for thorough training in the common branches, which there to situated as to be unable to attaid duriag the tlay by reason of having to do other work, moit need. A full attendance of pupils who appreciate the benefits to be derived from two hours drill in the common branch each evening ia what ia desired, and there is believed to be in the city enough who irkn attend, and in justice to themselvee ought to attend, to make the patronage ample to retain two teacher. It is not very encouraging when the school board has taken such pains to provide educational advantages for those wbo are too busy ia getting a living to attend the regular school sessions, to see so much apathy among those whom the design ia to benefit. Last year a good deal of enthusiasm waa manifested and the experiment was demonstrated a success.

Is there any less necessity for education this winter? VtJaM h. The fiftieth marriage auniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J. J.

E. RAWiiiNos, Agt. dw ApltlitHUn Hern for At for aba sua CtfaaeUf. W. a Gradaii, clerk of the tewn of If apis Grove, Bhawano county, was in Green Bey ad Fort Howard a few days recently, attempting to get aid for the suffsrsrs from last summer's fire.

He represents many of the people in Shaw ano county aa being absolutely destitute of the necessities for winter comfort, Their buildings wera burned aid the temporary structures which answered all purposes in warm wsather are now total ly iimuffioient for protection. Those who ara in the most destitute condition are new settler, principally Polish families who have purchased lands of J. J. Hoff, of Milwaukee, and have expended all tiieir means in the first plant. Aa effort is being made to secure state aid which Mr.

Gradski ia assured will be given soon as the legislature meets, but he is attempting to get aid to tide the sufferers over until that time. The committees appointed in both cities to secure relief for 6uSTorera from the Cres have been applied to, but as this call comes from outside the county it is not deemed withia the province of these committees to raise funds for those peo ple tinder the old instructions. Mr. Gradski baa applied to the Business Men's Associations but no definite action has yst been taken. It is said that the city of Shawano Las done all it conld for the rehef of the suffering bat has not by any meins supplied all the needs.

Some questioa ia raised as to whom those new SRttlorsia diutrees should look for aid and it is probable thatsoaca steps will be takes to ascertain directly the condition of the people wasting aid and on whom, if on anybody, the responsibility rests for their reher.
