William J. McDonald will become executive vice president and general manager of the Charles Town a a a replacing Robert G. Leavitt who will retire December 31. The appointment was among personnel changes announced by Sidney Gaines, chairman of the board of Shenandoah Corporation which operates the two thoroughbred tracks here for the Kenton Cor- poration. Other changes are: a promoted from assistant vice president to vice president.

Kohlhepp will continue in the positions of assistant general manager and director of muluels. Donald Hudson, appointed as vice president-finance. Hudson also is treasurer and comptroller of the company. Alvin S. Trenk to be elected to the board of directors.

Leavitt, who was called out of retirement at the beginning of the 1977 season to take over management of Charles Town, will become a member of the board of directors of the coroporation and will be available for consultation, Gaines said. Leavitt came to Charles Town in 1958 to supervise the completion of Shenan- doah Downs and was general manager there until his retirement at the end of the 1975 season. Under his i i a a Downs became one of the most successful racetracks in the country. Leavitt, who spent nearly- 45 years in thoroughbred racing, will return to his retirement home In North Port, Florida. a a director of advertising and i a i a Shenandoah Downs prior to the 1959 opening and took over the same position at Charles Town in 1969.

He resigned at the end of 1975 but has served the tracks as a consultant during this season. For the past two years he has been editor of the Horsemen's Journal, a national racing magazine published by the Hor- semen's Benevolent and Protective Association. He is a native of Washington, D.C. and a graduate of the University of Maryland. Kohlhepp, a Baltimorean, has been associated with area racing since the opening of Charles Town in 1933 and has been head of the mutuels department for more than 15 years.

Hudson, a native of Snow Hill on Maryland's Eastern Shore, joined the Charles Town Turf Club as comp- troller in 1975. He is a CPA and came into racing from the Campitol Center, a sports complex a Washington. Trenk is a principal of the Kenton Corporation. By United Press Internalional The Baltimore Colts and the Denver Broncos, the two teams with the best records in the NFL, will meet head- to-head Sunday at Denver in a game of much significance to each. The Broncos, on top in the AFC West Division, and the Colts, in first place in the AFC East, are each 9-1.

But Denver holds a mere one- game lead over the Oakland Raiders, 8-2, who face the hapless Buffalo Bills in Monday night's nationally televised game. Baltimore's lead over the a i a i Dolphins is not much more comfortable. The Dolphins, who stopped the St. Louis Cardinals' winning streak at six in a row with a 55-14 rout on Thanksgiving, are 8-3. A Baltimore loss would leave the Colls just one game in front of Miami and set up a NFL Summary By The Associated Press American Football Conference Eastern Division LT Pet.

a game the Broncos won 17-6. The Colts have won their last four games in a row, including last Sunday's victory over the New York Jets in which quarterback Bert Jones had his finest performance of the season as he completed 23 of 3fi passes for 322 yards and three and regained the No. 1 spot among AFC passers. Denver, which is aiming for the first playoff ap- pearance in its history, pulled out a 14-7 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs last week, as Craig Morton threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Haven Moses with 4:30 remaining in the game. In the tight AFC Central Division race, where all four clubs are separated by one game.

Cleveland hosts Los Angeles, Pittsburgh will be at the New York Jets, Cincinnati is at home for the New York Giants and Houston hosts Kansas City. Secret Memo Cops Feature At Laurel A (AP)-- Secret Memo took the lead in midstretch and held off the late rally of longshot Command Point to register a half-length tally in the $10,000 Mayflower purse at Laurel Race Course Friday. Secret Memo completed the six furlongs in 1:12 2-5 seconds and paid S18.80, $8.60 and S6. Command Point $18.40 and $6.80 and John To Berry was third and returned $3.40. The 2-4-1 exacta com- bination was worth $241.80.

The Browns and Steclers are tied for first place with C-4 records, while the Oilers and Bengals are r-5. It is i a 1 e. li unlikely, that a four-way tie for first could exist Sunday night. Houston should have little trouble with the struggling Chiefs, 2-8. and Cincinnati should pick up a victory over the Giants.

Cleveland has lot its last four meetings with the Rams, who lead the NFC Western Division with a 7-3 record. However, i which beat Dallas 28-13 last week, has a lifetime record of 3-0 against (he Jets and unless New York, 2-8, pulls off a minor miracle, chances are the Steelers will have the top spot to themselves. In the NFC Central Division, the Minnesota Vikings in serious trouble without quarterback Fran Tarkenton, out with a broken leg --need a victory over 2-8 Green Bay to maintain sole possession of first place. A loss would drop the Vikings' record to 6-5 and leave them in a first- place tie with the Chicago Bears, who beat Detroit 31- 14 on Thanksgiving. Rounding out Sunday's a a Cowboys, who have lost their last two after winning their first eight, are at Washington; New Orleans is at San Francisco; San Diego is at Seattle; Atlanta is at a a a Philadelphia is at New England.
