Now his activities are more constructive. He and other members spend their spare time making real planes come alive again. They are currently replacing the engines on the C47.

Through their efforts it is kept in new condition, even though the plane has the most air time 8 1 .000 hours of any plane of it's type in the world that is stil flying. The plane was built in 1939. saw service in Canada during the war, then was part of North Central Airline's fleet from 1 952-66. The wing also owns and is restoring a T6 trainer, a plane that has been rebuilt to resemble the Japanese Zero. Weske, 46, co-owner of the C47 with Mabrey, is a North Central employee in the maintenance division.

"I used to draw them al when I was in grade school during the war. About twenty years ago I began to dream of owning one." Now he does, and the pride illuminates his face' as he serves as co-pilot of theC47. Even a few of the real heroes of the war attend the Texas show. Pappy Boyington, of "Black Sheep" fame, sits in a booth in one of the hangars. Now, instead of scoring hits on enemy planes, he talks with some of the show's thousands of visitors some too young to remember what it was al about, many others too old to forget and he poses for pictures and sefls and autographs copies of his book.

Coon Rapids, and naff a dozen other members of the Minnesota Wing of the Confederate Air Force took Minnesota into this pretend war by flying a C47 troop-carrier to the event. The wing has over 100 active members. Each has his own reason for paying the 1 25 annual dues and donating his energy to restoring various WW I aircraft. For Worringer, 53, it's a chance to do what he was trained for. Worringer now lives in Bkxxnington and is a DC9 captain for North Central Airlines.

But in May of 1945, he had just graduated from the Air Force Flight School. War in Europe promptly ended, and there were already enough pilots in the Pacific. End of a combat pilot's career.
