Hawkeyes bring home bacon, elusive pig trophy Minneapolis Tribune Oct. 24, 1976 5C (f) -1 By Joe Soucheray Staff Writer The Iowa Hawkeyes captured the elusive Floyd of Rosedale Saturday afternoon and were so delighted to be host to a bronzed pig in their locker room that they worshipped it shrine style and mingled whoops and hollers with oinks and grunts. If a pig can do that imagine what a Big Ten title would do? "We Caldwell was in a reflective mood what with his injury and all, but he analyzed the 70-yard bomb to Schultz. "Good old roll off the option play," Caldwell said. "They'd been trying to defense that all day and we finally made it work for us.

Nobody in the Big Ten could stop a guy like Schultz when he gets free. The Gopher secondary tried hard but they couldn't match our people." "I wouldn't go that far," Schultz said. "The Gophers were good and active back there, they scrambled hard. But they're not the best we faced and we have some tough ones to play still." "I never even think about the last pass I threw," McLaughlin said. ''As far as I'm concerned I'm zero for eight on everything I throw." "How do you feel about having Floyd back at Iowa?" both Caldwell and McLaughlin were asked. "Oink," they said.

Winston, a 200-pound running back from Gary, scored Iowa's final score on a 42-yard course that took him straight through the line and then left up the sidelines. University of Minnesota football coach Cal Stoll showed his reaction to the Gopher's loss to Iowa Saturday. Norm Parker, left, assistant coach for defensive linemen, seemed to agree. Gophers Continued from page 1C 154 of their 169 passing yards; and 304 of their 418 total yards in the second half. And their defense turned the Gophers into sputtering disarray.

Minnesota got only one first down rushing in the second half; only 49 yards on the ground in the second half; just 139 yards total offense in the second half. Iowa 47. The Gophers needed only 10 plays to take a 7-0 lead with a minute left in the first quarter. Then, defensive back Brian Snyder recovered an Iowa fumble at the Hawkey 38, just two plays after the Gophers' touchdown. A Dungy pass on the first play was tipped off the hands of wide receiver Mike Jones in the Iowa end zone and the Gophers eventually had to settle for a Paul Rogind 36-yard field goal.

Four plays later, Gopher freshman reserve Keith Edwards broke through to partially block an Iowa punt, the ball squirting out of bounds at the hawkeye 45. Dungy completed a 15-yard pass to Jeff Anhorn end Kent Kitzmann charged for 11 to the Iowa 23 but jones had Dungy's pass skittered off his fingertips in the Hawkeye end zone and the Gophers tried to razzle-dazzle a fake field-goal attempt on fourth down at the Iowa 21. They were ped two yards short of a first can feast off this all winter," Iowa Coach Bob Commings said. The primary agents in Iowa's 22-12 upset were a junior quarterback from Dubuque named Tom McLaughlin, a bull of a running back named Nate Winston and split end Bill Schultz who has had better days receiving the ball but has never had a game in which he caught two touchdown passes. McLaughlin entered the game in the third quarter after starter Butch Caldwell left with a painful leg injury.

"Somebody," Caldwell said, "twisted it like a wishbone." McLaughlin, who parted against the Gophers last fall at Iowa City and has not started since, got hot and completed five passes in a row and five out of six for 60 yards. He commanded the drive that went 85 yards in 14 plays in the fourth quarter ending with a 28-yard TD pass to Schultz. It was not a spectacular play as Schultz's previous 70-yard score from Caldwell, but it was the same play. "Minnesota has an aggressive secondary," McLaughlin said, "but they weren't so good that they weren't beatable. I was ready to try any passing play.

Coach told me to keep warm on the sidelines. I didn't know I'd get into the "I've done that in practice before," Winston said, "but I've never run that far in a game for a touchdown. I just followed some leads and then the whole field opened up in front of me. It wasn't an audible, I was just told in the huddle to watch where their nose guard (Mark Slater) played and if he came up on the line I was supposed to veer away from there, lie did and I did. And that ain't all.

During the halftime in here the whole defense pledged that if we scored two touchdowns that would be all we would need. They would shut the Gophers out. We did and they did," "We didn't educate during half- time," Commings said, "we tried to correct the mistakes we had been making. We made the same errors any youthful club would make. But they prevented those in the second half and we had made all the youthful mistakes you could make." Gopher quarterback Tony Dun-gy's face and statistics told the morbid story.

He completed only 9 of 27 passes for the day and his 51 yards rushing (in 14 carries) was the best the Gophers had to offer. "You only get so many opportunities in every game," Dungy said, "and we ran out of them. We knew at halftime we should have had more points. We had our. chances to salt the game away.

But we didn't use them. "I don't think the NCAA thing (Minnesota placed on indefinite probation Thursday) had anything to do with it. We just didn't get the job done." Certainly, the Gopher defense gave Minnesota plenty of job opportunities in the first half. The Gophers owned field position for most of the first 30 minutes. First, defensive end Stan Systma picked off a Caldwell pass at the V-riA SuS9cSte with purchase of Any down.

So, Edwards shot through four plays later to block an Iowa punt the ball blasting through the end zone for a two -point safety and a 12-0 lead with 7:20 to play Gophers statistics ji Ptj Automatic Oiler ffPL'-fSr ftS Counter Vibration Big 2.3 Cu. in. engine Weight Lete Than 10 lb. a Quiet Tone Muffler Professional Quality starting as low as 1 wwB in tne nrst nan. The Gophers were right back at the Iowa 40 following the Hawk-eyes free kick after the saftey.

But they were penaizied for holding and eventually had to punt. It was to be the Gopher offense's, final whimper. "I believe in momentum," said Stoll. "And at halftime I could feel it slipping away. We had played the last two weeks with very high emotions and it finally caught up with us.

We didn have seven regulars practice Wednesday because of injuries and if you don't practice well, you don't play well. That's no excuse, though, we just got beat." The scythe fell quickly. On their second possession of the third quarter, the Hawkeyes struck for Caldwell's 70-yard pass to Schultz. The Hawkeyes faced second-and-17 when Caldwell found Schultz (the son of former Iowa basketball coach Dick Shultz) behind the Gopher secondary deep over the middle. He out-raced two defenders the last 25 yards and with 7:52 left in the third quarter the Hawkeyes trailed 12-7.

The ball bounced through the end zone for a safety. Wolve McLaughlin's first play was a completed pass.

So were his next four attempts. He, too, found Schultz open in the end zone. Like Iowa, he had been resurrected. A year ago he lost his job in the Minnesota game (a 31-7 Gopher victory). He hadn't started since.

"I have a special reason for feeling good after this game," he said. Iowa's last touchdown came two punts later. The Gophers were already reeling; the Hawkeyes wheeling. Gopher linebacker Steve Stewart still in uniform in front of his locker 45 minutes after the game was stark evidence of the Gophers' fate. THIRD QUARTER HAWKEYES: Caldwell hit Bill Schultz with a 70-yard touchdown pass.
