A year ago, a source said, the.

numbers were KSTP, 43; WCCO, 26;" WTCN, with "Mary Tyler Moore," and KMSP, with news, i0. In comparable six-day averages for I p.m., WTCN's showing was more dismal and WCCO's brighter. The source's figures showed KSTP and WCCO tied at 31 percent, WTCN at 5 and KMSP, with entertainment, 26. A year ago, KSTP led WCCO 33 to 25 percent, and KMSP had 9 percent compared with 24 percent for entertainment on WTCN. The affiliate switch, as expected, helped ABC news, cost NBC news and must please Ron Magers, KSTP anchorman.

The source's numbers showed that ABC evening news, nationally third but closing on NBC, was watched by 13 percent of us In May of last year on Ch. 9'and 20 percent of us In May of this year on Ch. 5 NBC news, on the other hand, got 28 percent a year ago on Ch. 5, but only 8 percent this year on 1 1 On CBS, the popularity of Walter Cronkite grew from 21 to 35 percent of the audience for the year. While WCCO's "6 p.m.

Report" gained against KSTP's "Eyewitness News," people may be switching afterward: Ch. 4 lost four share points from network (Cronkite) to local news, while Ch. 5 gained 11. Whether this means much usually depends on whether you ask winners or losers. As Amundson, anchorman Jim Dyer and weekend anchorman Stan Borman said, WTCN still is shaking the snags out of an assembly of 50 strangers in the news department.

It is obvious to professional news folks and, from what people tell me, to a lot of just plain viewers that WTCN's promises exceeded delivery. No serious observer of the Twin Cities news industry expected Ch. 11 news to unseat anyone the first time out, but it's something more than a pity that viewers indicated no greater preference for an operation with commitment to qual- Tunlngin 7G BEST SEATS Carmen Jazz Singer Extraa dinar Tuesday, June 26th 8,00 pm 'O nHmiccinn air-cooled Northrop Auditorium of Minnesota 373-2345 Summer Session Concerts Lectures 4 in, A IMCS01 Every Mon T-Bone or CHEF'S G0ID SPECIAL WEEKLY SPECIALS 0x SERVED FROM FILET MIGNON DINNERS BAR-B-QUE RIB DINNERS Reservations Recommended 929 007 MIDWEST STEREO Restaurant 6900 lake St St I. Tuning in Neal Gendler Minnesotans are not yet convinced that New News is Good News. Advance word of the May Arbitron ratings arrived last week, showing WTCN's big-bucks newscasts (the New News) attracted about the same-sized audience KMSP got for cheap. Folks at Metromedia's art-bedecked palace on Hwy. 55 professed not to be discouraged by the numbers, which put them in a distant fourth at 6 p.m. and tied at 10 p.m.

with KMSP's entertainment. Ratings were taken two months after WTCN be-, came the Twin Cities' NBC affiliate' and KSTP switched to ABC, which happened March 5. But newsroom insiders at the Golden Valley Guggenheim report that morale is low and, in an unusual move, investigative reporter Laura Didio was fired a couple of weeks ago before getting a single news report on the air. News Director Gil Amundson said he was dissatisfied with her work and that "the guts were missing" from her probe of police, prostitution and politicians. She reportedly disagreed.

Amundson, veteran Ch. 11 news director, said General Manager Bob Fransen had warned. "We're not going to make it in two months." But Amundson added, "The frustrating thing is that in my mind, we're doing a very good job of covering the news, and we beat the competition on some days." A major problem, he said, is that "we're battling habit. I think we'll feel good just to improve a bit every time." That sounds like stuff I've heard at WCCO. Amundson and the manager of another station said the first ratings period after the affiliation switches were made shouldn't be taken too seriously because the figures could reflect confusion or curiosity.

Amundson said, "It's too much to expect that we're going to put something on the air that's going to grab people in three months It took KSTP (Ch. 5) many years to overtake Ch. 4." Nielsen ratings were not available by the deadline for this column. I 1 Richard Lees ever. Teddv and Mini retire to FRI.
