That's not to say, though, that the Hogs didn't pick apart the Eagles' defense Reggie White, for one, seemed to disappear into thin air. "We set up our game plan so we could do a whole lot of different things with Reggie," said Joe Jacoby, who matched up with White most of the night.

"We just decided we couldn't worry about just one player and his reputation." It was that reputation, that of White and the whole Eagles defense, that the Redskins seemed so proud to have dismantled. Although Jacoby spoke of the Eagles with great diplomacy, many of the others didn't hesitate to celebrate what they consider the biggest win of this 5-0 start. "They had a great defense I mean, they've got a great defense, it's still there, I suppose but we were prepared for the defense they have," Byner said. "The offensive line persevered and we were given more opportunities to run so it got to the point that we felt like we had people who could run the ball against them. "At first, you really don't know if you want to run against the Eagles because they've got all these big defensive guys out there," Byner admitted, laughing.

"But after a while, I didn't even get tired. It was just fun." Despite Byner's heroics, 70 yards on nine carries from Gerald Riggs and the obviously strong overall offensive numbers, the Redskins quickly admitted to their own offensive inadequacy. Quarterback Mark Rypien was far from his best. The offense fumbled six times, twice on the snap, and Rypien was intercepted twice, once in the end zone. "We didn't execute inside the 20 as good as in the past and our turnovers hurt," Rypien said.

"Our defense made sure that those things didn't hurt us in the long run." As Rypien said, five sacks and three interceptions two by Green helped balance out all the mistakes the offense made. "We're still the no-names," Green said. "I kind of like it that way, though. It's a sneak attack and it worked for us." i by Jennifer Frey I Daily News Sports Writer WASHINGTON This is Charles Mann's problem. All week long, he heard about the Eagles' defense.

All week long, he heard about the Redskins' offense. All week long, he heard about this fabulous matchup the NFC's best defense vs. its No. 5 offense and he began to wonder if he and his defensive buddies should start wearing "No Name" on the backs of their shirts. So when it was all over when the Eagles left RFK Stadium with a piddling 89 yards of offense and no points Mann couldn't help but gloat a little.

After all, Mann finally had the chance to talk about what was supposed to be little more than the other defense in this game. i "That's a good point, and I'm glad you brought that up" said Mann, grinning happily, when asked to compare defenses in the game. "We've really felt like whenever we play the Eagles, we get overshadowed by their defense. We showed today that we can play with them still, we have to go out and get the respect that they get and we deserve." The numbers were satisfying very, very satisfying and Mann didn't mind if people mentioned them more than once or twice: The Eagles allowed 357 yards of offense; the Redskins allowed 89. The Eagles allowed 23 points; the Redskins allowed none.

While the Redskins defense held the Eagles scoreless for the first time since 1985 and extended their home shutout streak to three games the Eagles' defense (best against the rush in the league) let running back Earnest Byner carry 29 times for 95 yards and one touchdown. "To be honest, we started having fun in warmups and it just got better," said Mann, who had two sacks and smeared egg on Antone Davis's face all night In the game billed as The Defense vs. The Hogs that's what the big, burly Washington offensive line likes to be called it was the work of guys such as Mann and cornerback Darrell Green who got the job done. "Offensively, we didn't get a lot going, but we got enough done," said Redskins coach Joe Gibbs. "The defense, though, it was their night and I really want to PETER KOHAMA DAILY NEWS EAGLES STATISTICS Rushing 0 0 0 0 0 0 10 3 10 23 Eaglet Washington Yds.
