"On Her Majesty's Of all y- jw fo) mmh r' 'The Secret' Bob Lundegaard The elevator is the open, stairwell kind, like a moving cage, and while the hero is between floors, a man dashes into the building and runs up the stairs as if to intercept the elevator. Instead, he greets a woman at one of the landings. The threat has passed. The scene takes only a few seconds, but what a marvelously economical way to dramatize the prisoner's fear, a fear that never leaves him for the balance of the film.

It's one of many fine touches in this superb, largely unheralded film by Robert Enrico, which stars Jean-Louis Trintignant. I can't think of a recent film with better pacing. Enrico tightens the screws on his hero and his audience every so often, then relaxes them again in the finest Hitch-cockian tradition. En route he gives us some interesting character studies in the persons of a kindly author and his pretty young wife who befriend the. fugitive and end up Sharing his peril.

The husband, convincingly portrayed by Philippe Noiret, takes on faith the fugitive's story that he was imprisoned and tortured presumably by the French government for "accidentally finding out something no one is allowed to know." The wife (Marlene Jobert) isn't so sure, especially when the radio broadcasts bulletins about an escaped mental patient who kills when cornered. There's not much mystery as to which he is, victim or maniac, and the secret he possesses doesn't matter. What does matter is that Enrico has created the classic us-versus-them story for the 1970s, when revelations involving the FBI and CIA that would have shocked us 10 years ago are routinely reported and promptly forgotten. We learn a good deal about the husband and wife, almost nothing about the central character, whom Trintignant plays with superb impassivity. "The Secret" hasn't earned the raves of "Barry Lyndon" or any of the other latest rages, but it's far more worth seeing.
