frequently visited While his going away Is a sad Wow to his parems they are proud to have had a son who fought fearlessly and valiantly to the ath for his country ECKIS FAMILY pEUNION The seeond annual reunion of the descendants of Daniel Eckls deceased of Milton township father of Eckls of Elm street Youngstown who is the only surviving son and patriarch of this branch of the Eckls family was held August 2 at the summer residence of Mr and Mrs A Manchester about one and a hnlf miles east ojustintown Mrs Manchester LeonaTTS the only child of and Florence Molt Eckls who wltH 35 or more of their nephews nieces grand nephews and nieces cousins and col lateral relatives and visitors celebrat od the event In a most nlensant In- visitors and collateral relatives were Mrs Adeline Moherman widow of Winchester Moherman deceased of MAHONING COUNTY CULTURAL SOCIETY AND THE CANFIELD FAIR Ask the average farmer what agriculture means and he would probably think you a fool for risking the question If he gave you an answer it would probably be Agriculture is the business of raising products from the land Bailey says It is customary to limit the word agriculture to the growing of grains forage bread stuffs textiles and the like and to tho raising of animals Webster says In a general sense it is the cultivation of the ground for the production of vegetables and fruits for tho use of man and beast or tho art of preparing the soil sowing nnd planting seeds dressing the plants and renewing the crop also the raising and feeding of cattle or stock Both correct no doubt but they have failed to mention two products of tho fnrm the harvesting of which required the greatest activity I remember as boys we always ran on high I refer to bumblebees and yellow Jackets Miniature bombing warplanes they were Every time they went over the top wo would von lllndenburg to a more stratetglc lino of defense Maxim Lewis nnd Browning machine guns nre slow In comparison Hut here 1 am on another tangent nnd yoi men thinking nf the time tho jtckets crawled up your pants leg and torpedoed you Got our minds eyo on boyhood Incidents Instead of on the Canfield Fair Incidentally and that Horticultural exhibit particularly I mentioned A canning exhibit and demonstration by city demonstrator Miss Mougey She cannot only tell you all you need to know about canning but she can pronounce her name I cant When she gets started to talk you will at once conclude she is a llvo wire She starts you off on the subject of food conservation with tho reverse lever telling you probably to cat what you can and can what you cant a sort of de Hooverlzcd conservation but before she has your mental can filled and sealed you will discover that she has told you several things ou didnt know especially about tho practical side of food conservation Mr Lehman says she will talk and demonstrate in the Horticultural Tent but didnt tell the hour Just come in and look over our exhibit while you wait If you should think of any questions to ask about fruits well call Taggart he cant tell you all he knows about fiuits in the three days of the fair but he can answer your questions to your satisfaction Next A cattle exhibit by the Ma honing Cqunty Improvement Association Ten cows five from each cow test association Nine heifers from Mahoning County Calf Club Boys will take care of the heifers These will be put up for sale I mean tho heifers on the afternoon of the last day And here Is where Mr Parshall guts his chance to talk Dont miss it It you want a calf No these cows and calves will not be under the Horticultural tent Mr Lehman dldn tell me where they will be Just follow Mr Parshall or ask him There will bo thousands of other agricultural exhibits at the Canfield fair thats why It Is the biggest county fair in the state Heres a few For nearly 20 years Clay and Knauf rival florists have filled the north wing of the exhibition building with Mowers and plants a veritable conservatory Its worth going many miles to see Theyll be there again you cant keep them away They nearly crowd our old school mate Rup right off the map but hell bo there too with his display of Indian relics coins of all nations except Germany Tho cast wing or vegetable hall is a great feature strictly agricultural There youll seo asparagus and artichokes beets and broccole chicora and celerlac dandelions and pe tsal endive and egg plant garlic and gom bo kalo and kohl rabl lettuce and lultets mustard and martynla pro boscidea onions and oysters vegetable parsley and some pumpkins radishes and rhubanb squashes and spinach tomatoes and turnips and other things too numerous to mention You may not know all of them when you see them 1 dont think I would but I can ask so can you Then the Dublin grange and possibly two or three others will have competing exhibits mighty good ones they have been this year they will bo better If you cant find them ask John Martin hes a granger I think Tho south wing exhibit is neither ag formal nnd enlovable visit Some ricultural or horticultural Part of It of the boys and young men engaged usually pictorial but the balance is in the ancient sport of pitching quoits likely to bo anything wearable If the and woved themse ves experts by exninuors una wo cuuuesBiuuui throwing several ringers Others Including the younger ladies exhibited their skill on the cornuet grounds in a few well played games Some of the other ladles were knitting sweaters and socks for the soldier boys There were no set speeches but much earnest serious and patriotic conversation about the war and Fochs great successful drive against the brutal Germans on the western fiont A es aKfeeable My opinion never did go for much but possibly a suggestion will Somebody tell the fair board to imp the smith wine for the Mahonln 1 County Horticultural Society exhibit the Mahoning County Experiment Farm exhibit the Ohio State Exhibit from Wooster the Mahoning County Red Cross exhibit etc etc next year Its too late to do it this year The west wing I dont know what bountiful and delicious basket picnic all it will contain this year but plea mnner -was and Mrs Frank Eckls and daughters Helen and Mrs Florence Moherman lAmong the urauu adu mere may have been some linen but no shoddy about the work at least Fine enough for anybody too fine for some people I could mention They tell rae those who know that the live stock exhibit is generally fine If it Isnt fine this year it will not be Mr Lehmans fault for he Is after everything on four feet that is exhibit able Guernseys Jerseys Durhams Including the kind you have painted on your barn and other breeds I hardly know a Guernsey from a Shropshire but Lehman does ask blm If you get mixed I nearly
