call 44 PHILA. DAILY NEWS NOV. 2, 1993 Isabell 'Mom' Garrison; values were great' by Jim Nicholson Daily News Staff Writer Isabell R. "Mom" Garrison, whose old-time values never went out of fashion with her family, died Saturday. She was 104 and lived in West Philadelphia.

Garrison remembered when President William McKinley was assassinated, and how she had shaken the hand of Booker T. Washington when he came to town to receive an award. These and other stories she would tell her children and their children and grandchildren. But what they Garrison recalled best Garrison was her telling them how to live a good life. "I admired everything about her," said Charles Craft, a grandson.

"I like to think that everything I am is because of her. She stressed honesty and helping out fellow human beings. She also told me to be the best you can be." When Mom Garrison reached 100, she was given a giant birthday gala and agreed to be inter-. viewed on her recollections by representatives of the Smithsonian Institution and the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum in Philadelphia, said her daughter, Irene Craft. "She enjoyed her home and her family," said her daughter.

"Everybody called her She said her mother attributed her longevity to "hard work and raising a big family." Six of her nine children predeceased her. The former Isabell West, Garrison grew up on a farm in Acamac County, Va. She and her husband, James Garrison, came to Philadelphia when she was 19 and lived for a time in South Philadelphia near 18th and Hicks streets. She did domestic work and he worked for bricklayers. He died in 1960.

For many years, Garrison was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. About 20 years ago she converted to Catholicism and was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Roman Catholic Church. "She was a beautiful human being." said Marilyn Craft, wife of grandson Charles. "Her values were great." Charles and Irene Craft said Mom Garrison was always immaculately turned out when she stepped out the door, a trait that also rubbed off on succeeding generations. "My husband even pressed his pants before he went to see the circus recently," she said.

Survivors also include another daughter, Elizabeth Lundy; a son, Edward Garrison; a sister, Lillian Anderson; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 18 greatgreat-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren.
