He was 65 and lived in Turnersville, N.J. Bowen began work as a patrolman at the naval base, and when he retired in June 1989, he was supervising the criminal investigation sion and was a physical security specialist. He moved to Turnersville from South Philadelphia about three years ago. In 1967 he was forced to leave the Inquirer, where he was a stereotype shop foreman, because of a back injury he incurred in the service.

He also had worked for the old Evening Bulletin and various print shops in the city. Whatever job Joe had, he gave it 110 percent. loved every bit of it," Deaths Daily News Staff Writer Bowen Bowen said his wife of nearly 47 years, the former Adaline Graham. "Any job he worked on, he did the best." Albert "Bud" Massarro, his son-inlaw, said, "He was the type that had a little boy's enthusiasm with a new toy on Christmas when he had a val base informed Joe that he had won an award for a suggestion that save the government money. He had suggested a method for separating various metals, a system he learned while working in the newspaper business years ago.

During World War II he left to serve in the Army Air Corps as a flight instructor for B-24 bombers. He was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant. There was a certain irony in his.

"He couldn't do enough for anybody. He was always there to help them." His son-in-law said Joe was the kind of man who would "go out in the middle of the night for you in a cold blizzard." In 1985, when Massarro was having car trouble, Joe showed up at his door and handed him the keys to a 1981 Grand Prix. It was a gift. Ollie Smargiassi, a longtime friend, said: "He chauffeured everybody around. He was unbelievable.

Her age was not disclosed. Hill, who retired as a cleaner for the Philadelphia Board of Education, was a former resident of the city's Fairmount section.

She had also worked for a time at Publicker Industries in Philadelphia. "I know a lot of people say this about their mothers, but it's true, she was always there for you," said Lillian R. Murray, her daughter. "She was close with her kids and good to them. They would see Mom and they got what they wanted.

We were married, and still, if we needed anything, we'd still come back to Mom." For the most part, the former Mary Stapleton raised the children herself. She had worked at various jobs since she was in her teens. She came from a large family and had to drop out of school as a youngster to live with families and send her paycheck home to her mother, Murray said. Despite her lack of formal education, Murray said, "she was a smart woman and worldly wise." She usually read four or five newspapers a day, especially the Philadelphia newspapers after she moved to Atlantic City. She also watched TV news to stay current on world events.

She would watch political debates, said her daughter, but it didn't faze her: She already had her mind made up as to whom she would vote for, and debates couldn't change it. CLARETHA GRANBERRY GILL May 6, 1941 July 1 1, 1987 Sad and sudden was the call of one so dearly loved by all. The bitter grief, the shock severe that was to part with one so dear. Though her smile is gone forever, her hand we cannot touch, we shall never lose the memories of the one we love so much.

We often sit and think of you and speak of how you died, and to think you could not say goodbye before you closed your eyes. Only those have lost can tell the pain of parting without a farewell.
