Someone asked Savon if he thought Cuba, like the FMern Hloc countries, would have to adjust its system to allow more personal freedom.

"In Cuba's case, Fidel says, and the masses of the people say, you never go back, Savon said. At that imt, the interpreter seemed to be huv trouble, and a Voice of America ravr reporter in the audience intu lectcd that Savon had used a popular Utin American expression "Taru atris ni pa cojer impulso" which, she said, meant, roughly, "you can't forward by sliding backward Savon said that Cuba was rviiiung its system, but that Cubans were resolved to "stay in socialism or die Cuba feels stronger than ever tins moment, from a political point view." Savon is Cuban boxer, a flashy, 6 4 punching machine with tippling muscles and high cheekbones that remind people of his predecessor and idol, Telofilo Stevenson. But Savon the boxer didn't raise many eyebrows last night in lurching through a 5-0 decision over Soviet Viktor Akshonov in the 201-pound weight class semifinals at the Goodwill Games. It was Savon the political analyst and social critic who provided the evening's Savon opened bis post-bout press conference by explaining, through an interpreter, that his awkward, out-of -kilter performance was due to nerves. Why was he nervous? Because of the terrible indignities visited upon his countrymen by the conniving capitalists, of course.

Cuba, considered the favorite when the boxing competition began, was a lackluster 6-4 through last night's bouts. Several Cuban stars were first-round upset victims. Many observers feel the Cubans came here unmotivated and out of shape. But this is not why Savon feels Cuba has been struggling. "I feel that my other ICubanl boxers have lost because of the decisions have been made," Savon said.

"They're not losing on the quality of their boxing or on their technique. The situation "here has been the world against Cuba. Savon alleged that Cuban boxers and support personnel were denied visas, which weakened the Cuban team. "When they did not allow a visa for our federation! president, we realized it was a psychological war for our athletes," Savon said. United States Amateur Boxing Association spokeswoman Leslie King said no visas were denied to Cuban boxing personnel who were invited attend the Goodwill Games.

King said invitations were issued to only seven Cuban boxers, based on the results of the 1989 world championships. "In the weight classes they aren't here in, they did not do well at the world championships," King said. They were welcome to bring all the support personnel they wanted, as long as they paid their way." Cuban national boxing team coach Alcides Sagarra said more boxers and support personnel should have been invited. Sagarra said the only denied visa was that of Jose Ramon Fernandez, who was to have been the head of the Cuban delegation, and who is president of the organizing committee of the Pan American Games. Published reports have quoted State Department officials as saying that Fernandez, an official in Fidel Castro's government, was denied a visa because of the unofficial, private nature of the Goodwill Games they are not sponsored by the United States Olympic Committee.

Anyhow, Savon didnl want anyone to get the idea that the Seattle results meant Cuba's boxing prowess was waning r- "Cuba, since' 1974 lias been lh Visa, MasterCard I MAC Accepted 755-0414 2528 So.
