191 30 PHILA. DAILY NEWS MAR. 31, 1993 Deaths Mary Jefferson Cook; concerned for justice by Jim Nicholson Daily News Staff Writer Mary E. Jefferson "Nan" Cook, who maintained a razor-sharp sense of social justice throughout her life, died Monday. She was 75 and lived in West Philadelphia.

Nan Cook never forgot why her father came to live in Philadelphia. The alternative was to die in Augusta, Ga. It was turn-ofthe-century Georgia and Nan's father, Wilson J. Jefferson, was a journalist and college graduate. His work was published in the Manchester Guardian and the London Spectator, as well as U.S.

newspapers, including the old Philadelphia Ledger. He was a man who would have attracted attention anywhere. And for a black man in that time and place, Jefferson attracted a lot of the wrong kind of attention from the wrong people. He was a member of the Niagara Movement, out of which came some of his friends and associates such as W.E.B. DuBois and Walter F.

White who founded the NAACP. An intellectual is the No. 1 enemy of any tyranny. So, Jefferson, his wife, Minnie and children, including 2-year-old Mary, fled Georgia around 1920. "It was truly a family chased out in the dark of night, with the Ku Klux Klan coming to get them," said daughter-in-law, Deborah Seay, recounting the family's history.

Nan Cook was a woman who always helped the underdog, and who took in all children, everywhere. She was a woman who could gently cradle a child or rip apart the hypocritical facade of an adult. She was a woman who was, said Seay, "a pistol." "She was a very, very fiesty woman. She didn't mince words," said Seay. "She was a champion of the underdog, a champion of children and champion of those who were weak and unable to do for themselves." A couple of months ago, Seay started helping Nan with her paperwork.

Seay could never understand why Nan sometimes mentioned all the bills she had when, in fact, she shouldn't have had many. "When I took her checkbook I found out. She was giving to every conceivable charity for children in the world. Children's charities I had never heard of," said Seay, who is retired after 33 years as a teacher. Nan always had a special rapport with children and was always able to keep the lines of communication open because, while she gave her opinion, she would never be judgmental." Int. Holy Sepulchre Cem. Cook Cook For a number of years, Cook was a Get Set assistant teacher. Her last school before retiring was the Smith Elementary School at 19th and Reed streets. Many of her students and their parents stayed in touch with her after she left the school system.

Seay said Nan also was a visionary. "In 1970, she donated her body to science. Specifically, the corneas. Her father had gone blind." He died in 1959 at age 97. Cook was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War in its earliest stages, when most of the media, politicos and populace were still buying into it.

In another day and time, Cook might have accomplished more professionally. "If things had been the way they are now, she might have been a lawyer," said Seay. As it turned out, her son, Harry R. Seay, became a lawyer. A grandson, Geoffrey, was an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia and now is in practice with his father.

All four of her grandchildren hold graduate degrees. There is a crisp pride that emanates from Cook's family members a clear unspoken understanding that all of her descendants represent her values and name and had better live up to them. "If life slapped her down, she was going to get back in the race," said Seay. For people who didn't want to look at the truth or face injustices, she'd say, "I can't stand people who think its a Barnum and Bailey world made of papier mache." Nan's real joy, said Seay, "was mostly chewing the fat with the family. She enjoyed, like, a smoke and a beer, that's for sure.

Her life mostly centered around the family. She was never happier than when we were all around." Nan might have died. But she is still around. When her son Harry went over to her house near 47th and Chestnut streets yesterday he put on a coat and tie, out of habit, said his wife. And granddaughter Stephanie, who usually does her own hair, made an appointment with the hairdresser.

She told her mother she had to because "Nan would want it to look just right." Cook also is survived by two other grandchildren, Andre and Angelique, two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wilson, Henry and Owen Jefferson, and a sister, Mildred Burton. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Reeve Memorial Presbyterian Church, 50th and Aspen streets. Mildred Anastasia Brooks Mildred Anastasia Brooks, a retired Pennsylvania Railroad employee, died Saturday. She was 81 and lived in South Philadelphia.
