26 PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS Dec. 19, 1989 Marian Sprague, Psychoanalyst By Jim Nicholson criminal lawyer, were being molded. Marian Barsel Sprague, a prominent Philadelphia child psychoanalyst whose sensitivity and compassion extended beyond her patients to people everywhere, died Saturday. She was 85 and lived in Haverford. Not quite 5 feet tall and weighing less than 100 pounds, she looked almost frail even in her younger years.

But over decades, her diminutive form cast a shadow that seemed Herculean. Her intellect, resolve and courage became the stuff of lore and legend to family and friends. From 1944 until 1986, she and her husband, internationally known adult psychoanalyst George S. Sprague, lived at the Park Town Apartments at 22nd Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, where they also had their practices. He died in May 1986, and she retired a year later.

But she never gave up her study and Sprague Sprague Deaths Daily News Staff Writer concern for the human condition. Until a month before she died, she was still engaging in the kind of penetrating thought and discussions of how people treat other people, which came to epitomize her personality. The boys at the dinner table, sons Dick and Sidney, did not hear how Mom made the casserole or what happened on the radio soaps that day. They heard Mom and Dad vigorously debate politics, social problems and world events. And more, the kids were urged to participate, and when they offered an opinion, Mom and Dad listened to them.

Sprague, future Philadelphia deputy district attorney and prominent "The family always no matter what we did, our family was always together at dinnertime, no matter what you had to do. The family took vacations together," said Dick Sprague, with whom she lived. It's a lesson to all professionals today so busy they don't have time for family two incredibly busy people who always gave time to their family.

"I used to say when I gave speeches that whatever credit I receive is due to my parents, and when I did bad, it was in spite of them," said If ever there was a person who felt the problems of the world, it was her. Somebody starving somewhere in the world, that was a concern of hers." Over the years she met a lot of people of note, power and wealth worldwide. But titles and treasures didn't move her, recalled her son. She'd wear the same shoes for years as long as they looked presentable. "She really felt every individual had an opportunity to make this world a better place and that was important to try to do," he said.

"That was her. measure of people, how much they attempted to do others). I was very, very proud of her." Marian Barsel learned about, adversity and achievement early. Born in Safed, Palestine, she was the sixth child in a family of eight. The family of her father, Rabbi Chaim Barsel, had lived in Palestine for generations.

But World War I was causing upheaval throughout Europe and the Middle East, and he emigrated with some of his family to New York, later sending for his wife, Marian, a son and another daughter. But the Great War forced them to detour through Istanbul, Turkey, where all four contracted typhus and Marian's mother died. But the 12- year-old Marian managed to get herself and her brother and sister to Vienna, where there were family. friends. She remained in Vienna until she See DEATHS Next Page Annenberg's James Ricciardelli James P.
