Death Notices 16 PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS Deaths Susanna Koethe, 100; loved her adopted land Susanna Horvay Kosempel Koethe, who loved the rich life she found as an immigrant to the United States nearly a century ago, died Sunday of heart failure. She was 100 and lived in Lansdowne. The former Susanna Pattiga was 12 when her mother, a widow, decided to bring her family to America from their native Neuewalddorf, a village in the Tatra mountains of Austria-Hungary. Little Susanna was dazzled by the Philadelphia of 1906. She loved the German-American community of 10th Street and Girard Avenue, John Wanamaker's department store and the parades.

In 1913, her mother became ill and wanted to return to the old country to die. Susanna reluctantly returned. There, she married R. John Horvay. A month after their child was born, her husband was killed while serving in the German Army during World War I.

She then married John Kosempel, who died in the early 1940s. In the mid-40s, she married Hermann K. Koethe of Lansdowne. They had been married 25 years when he died in 1970. Susanna had returned to the United States in 1922.

During her younger years she worked as a housekeeper and later as a seamstress. Linda Koethe, a granddaughter, said her grandmother was an energetic presence in any room. "She'd walk into a room, and if she didn't know somebody, would walk up and say, 'I'm Susanna said her granddaughter. "She was very vivacious and young at heart." by Jim Nicholson Daily News Staff Writer Susanna Morikawa, another granddaughter, said: "She always talked about how wonderful the city was, even though it was tenaments and outdoor toilets. She started working for a family, and one summer they took her to the shore." Morikawa said her grandmother "loved to sing and dance, polka and waltzes and folk dances, into her mid-90s.

She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always had that childlike quality." Called "Grandmom" by her family, she also enjoyed playing pinochle and gardening. Family members said Koethe wanted to live to be 100. She had suffered a heart attack in 1950 and a mild stroke in 1960, but heeded doctor's advice and kept herself in good condition. Her health was vigorous enough at her 100th birthday party on June 10 for her to sing for her party guests.

A week later, she suffered a mild stroke and her health began to fail. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Susanna M. and Werner E. Koethe, with whom she lived; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Her son, John Horvay, died in 1990.
