80 PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS Friday, Feb. 23, 1990 J.T. Wheeler; Loved God Family By Jim Nicholson Daily News Staff Writer John T. Wheeler, chairman of his church deacon board and a man who liked to say that everything anyone needed to know about getting through this life was in "The died Tuesday. He was 66 and lived in West Philadelphia.

An electrician who retired after more than 40 years with Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Wheeler was an extremely proud man on that day 12 years ago when he was named to head the board of deacons of King David Baptist Church -a very important job second only to the pastor's in responsibilities, trust and workload. "He wasn't a churchgoer. He was a churchdoer," said the Rev. Harry I. Brown, pastor of King David.

"He loved the Lord, Wheeler and he was a Wheeler Deaths just because I said call my father, he'd go and do it," Burrell said. Another daughter, Vermell Wheeler Keitt, said, "He always asked me, 'Do you need any money. Do you need Like you do your little kids, even after I was married." Often he would take Vermell, now a missionary, on visits to sick and shut-in members of the congregation. The Wheeler girls, which included daughters Gwenzetta Wheeler and Johnnie Thurmond, didn't have to call on Daddy often because he was usually doing for them before they could ask. Wheeler could cook, wash and clean house with the best.

He believed a man's work included any chore that would lighten the load for his wife and girls. His wife, the former Gwendolyn Mozell Little, died in 1978. It was Daddy who cooked a couple of turkeys and brought them over to a daughter's house when he came for a holiday dinner. He showed them how to clean pots and dishes as he was preparing a meal SO there wouldn't be a big mess afterward. When the girls were young and he worked the second shift, he fixed their hair and got them off to school when his wife was working at Methodist Hospital.

And he had dinner ready in the evening. "It wasn't no, that's a man's job and that's a woman's job. He pitched in. He'll live with me every day," said Johnnie Thurmond. "If you talked to him one time you'd remember this guy.

He was a gentleman." Thurmond said the girls never wanted to displease Daddy because no one wanted to see him disappointed in them. Burrell agreed. She said, "All my father had to do was shake his head two times, once to the right and once to the left, and that would do it. That would hurt me. I'd rather he would whip me than shake his head.

"He was a beautiful person," said Burrell, "so kind whenever he talked to you there was a feeling, a beautiful feeling. So gentle, so kind." The girls could talk to Daddy about of anything and everything. They sometimes liked to tease him and he teased back. In the early years, before he went in to work for Sun Ship, Wheeler barely made ends meet on some of the jobs. And sometimes when money ran out, he would quit a job just to get the first week's paycheck that was held back and quickly find another job.

Burrell said her father was one of the "old-time neighbors, a neighbor See DEATHS Next Page Death Notices ADORNO On Feb. 22, 1990, BEATRICE I. (nee Castro), beloved wife of Paul C. and mother of Paul E. Adorno and Beatrice A.

He loved the Word, and he loved to tell folks about the Word This man was valuable." Darcenia Burrell said her dad would hold up his Bible and say: "Anything you want to know, its in this book. Read this book right here, Darcenia. Whatever is going on in this world is right here in this book." John Wheeler could quote Scriptures because he loved the Lord, and Burrell and her three sisters could quote Daddy because they idolized him. On the short side and slightly built and balding, he was not a particularly forceful personality. Usually he did more listening than talking.

But his countless acts of kindness and concern for family, friends and strangers made him grow to heroic proportions as the four Wheeler girls grew older and saw him through more world-wise eyes. To the end, of course, he would always see his daughters as the same little Daddy's girls who would dutifully be on the front step no later than 7 p.m. and in the house a short time later. "If a friend needed a ride or a car broke down, I'd say, call my father, he'll do it. All he'd have to do is call and say, 'Mr.
