July are now under way for the pro- nosed road from Yosemiie Valley into Hetch Hetchy Valley. Col. C. S. Thomson, superintendent of To- semlle park, announced on a visit to Oakdalc last week.

The road is to be paid for by the city of San Francisco, but will bo built by the park service. It will be a thirteen-mile stretch through the most scenic part of the Sierra, and will be paved with asphalt. Superintendent Tomson a I that surveys were to be made immediately also to determine the best method of a new entrance Into the park over the Big Oak Flat so as to eliminate the control system. The plan already agreed upon has 1. been cast aside, because of the ob- jectionable features of the tunnel, and the new surveys will provide either for a wide one-day road, or, possibly.

Colonel Thompson said, it may be decided to improve the present road and use it simply for an outbound highway and contract a new road for down traffic. Either method would permit tha elimination of the-control system and wouid greatly popularize traffic over the Big Oak Flat highway. Colonel Thomson said that plans were well under way for construction of the new Tiopa highway, which will follow the grand canyon of the'Tuolumne and make'it ona of the most scenic highways in tha world. This improvement will ba the next work undertaken by. the p'ark service.

Colonel Thomson reported the Big Oak Flat road in good shape and said It is being more heavily traveled this year than in years. my opinion, it is the most scenic route," said Colonel Thomson, "and as such hos attractions which the proposed new route will not have."
