The alfalfa acreage of Michigan increased over 260,000 acres this year following alfalfa campains conducted the past winter by agricultural extension workers in that state. Next to the United Kingdom, Italy is the largest importer of American wheat, having received over 32,000, 000 tjushels in 1920, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. France ranks next, with 26,000, 000 for the same year. More than a billion and a half pounds of butter was produced in the United States during 1921, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

This is an increase of 10V2 per cent over the production in 1920. Consumption increased more than production by 20,000,000 pounds, the difference being taken care of by imports and butter withdrawn from cold storage. Effective Rat Clean-up The bad results of carelessness in leaving breaks in the basement walls of a building originally intended to be rat proof are shown in a case recently reported to the Bilological Survey of the United States Denartment nf A. riculture. In the course of a rat cam- paign in Portland, in which the rodent-control men from the department were, backed by the city bureau health the chamber of com- merce a budding with unrepaired breaks of this sort was visited.

The owner was advised to clean up all the rubbish in his basement, repair the breaks in the cement wall, use bar- mm carbonate on Hamburg steak to poison the rats, and also to set some traps. A few days later it was learn ed that in removing the trash three rat nests were uncovered, one of which contained 15 young.
