Part of the Ridge Avenue spur of the Broad Street Subway, the station was closed permanently yesterday after complaints that "there were a group of people hanging around the station involved with drugs," said SEPTA spokesman Jim. Whitaker. "We did have our police patrol the station as frequently as possible, but since it is very lightly used and there are other and easier ways to get to 12th and Spring Garden, we decided to close it," Whitaker said.

The intersection also is served by bus routes, Whitaker said. He said the station served as few as 20 or 30 people a day. The decision followed a public hearing earlier in the summer that produced "no major objections" to the closing, he said. Whitaker said he believed it was the first time SEPTA had ever permanently closed a subway station. SAM PSORAS DAILY NEWS Sassafras: leg up Pup: 3 Legs And a Smile This week's Adopt a Pet at the Morris Animal Refuge, 1242 Lombard is something special.

It's Sassafras, a 6-week-old female pup. She's part Doberman pinscher, black with tan markings and, according to a shelter spokeswoman, "is adorable and has a sweet disposition." What makes Sassafras a "special little puppy," said the spokeswoman, is that "she was born with only three legs, but she gets around great." If you'd like to adopt Sassafras, call 735-32S6. A S25 donation is requested. Max, the kitten that was last week's Adopt a Pet at the Pennsylvania SPCA, 350 E. Erie was taken in by Lisa Rieger of Northeast Philadelphia.
