Her brother was born James Bernard Lavin, but he was better known to parishioners at St. Columba Church, 24th Street and Lehigh Avenue, as "Chick." a family nickname. James Bernard and two other brothers, William Leo and John Francis, became priests. Joseph and Walter chose secular life. Father Michael was the last living son.

During the Great Depression, Lavin taught religion at Northeast Catholic High School in Frankford. He planned to join the Holy Ghost Order, but was dissuaded because of his poor hearing. He entered the Trappists with the late Thomas Merton, a philosopher who wrote several books on religious philosophy, including a study of Buddhist thought. Father Michael was ordained in 1941, and four years later left Kentucky with 18 other monks to build the monastery in Georgia.

They stayed in a converted barn, and their lives centered on work, study and prayer. During one five-year period, he went off to live the life of a hermit as part of Trappist religious practice. "I last visited my uncle two years ago, and at age 86 he still inspired me. His life was a joyful one of love and sacrifice," said his nephew, Larry Lavin, former director of Philadelphia Community Legal Services. "He treasured taking us on walks about the monastery grounds, where they grew their own food vegetables and fruit gathered eggs, and made cheese.

His walks were more like tours, never less than seven miles long," added Lavin, director of I the National Health Law Program in Washington, D.C.
