vying woman, spouse decide to die together United Press International Madison, Wis. Rather than face certain separation by death, a University of Wisconsin professor and his terminally ill wife committed suicide together, authorities said Tuesday. Dr. William C. Lewis, 57, a professor of psychiatry, and his wife Katherine, 55, were found dead in each other's arms Monday.

Authorities said the cause of death was a drug overdose, and Dane County Coroner Clyde Chamberlain ruled it a double suicide. The oldest of seven Lewis sons, Madison attorney William C. Lewis said his mother had been seriously ill for more than a year and had been told she might live up to five years or die at any time. "My father and mother were very much in love with each other," he said. "We wondered what my father would do if anything ever happened to mom." Lewis said the couple had talked about suicide with the family and "this solution was not a bad one." Sandy 'grave' is fatal in N.J.

fraternity rite New York Times Service Long Branch, N.J. A 19-year-old Monmouth College student died early Tuesday when a sandy "grave" he was forced to dig in the rain -swept beach as part of a fraternity initiation prank collapsed as he was lying in it. The victim of the hazing incident William Flowers was reported to have been the first black allowed to pledge for the chapter of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. Seven fraternity members who were said to have ordered the rite were arrested and charged with manslaughter. Although the victim managed to kick his legs nearly clear as sand poured into the 5-foot-deep hole, neither the students nor the first patrolman at the scene were able to extricate him from the heavy, wet mound of sand, a police spokesman said.

When a fire truck and first-aid squad arrived 15 minutes later and pulled Flowers from the hole, he was unconscious. He was pronounced dead at a medical center. The doctor said he had died of asphyxiation caused by the "aspiration of sand and compression of the chest." The seven fraternity members reportedly had ordered Flowers and four other pledges to dig graves and to lie in them. The seven were released in $2,500 bail each for a preliminary hearing Nov. 25.

Two killed in accidents on state roads A rural Waterville man was killed in a car-truck accident Tuesday and an elderly St. Paul woman was struck while walking across the street Monday night, raising the 1974 Minnesota highway death toll to 713, compared with 892 a year ago. The victims were identified as: Robert Jackson, 53, Waterville, Minn. Marie Sekevitch, 78, 1947 Grand St. Paul.

Police said the car Jackson was driving and a truck collided on Hwy. 14, one mile east of Mankato. Two men in the truck received minor injuries and one remained hospitalized. Mrs. Sekevitch was hit by a car driven by Thaddeus Madden, 16, St.

officials By David Staff Correspondent Washington, D.C. Five jurors from the dismissed Wounded Knee trial in St. Paul, and others seeking dismissal of all charges remaining from the 1973 occupation of the South Dakota town, held an inconclusive meeting Tuesday with Justice Department attorneys. The attorneys, who represented policy-making officials, declined to discuss the group's request, that the department the remaining charges against about 100 people. Dallas Salisbury, special assistant to Jonathan Rose, the deputy attorney general, said that he would provide "a substantive response" in writing.

However, he and three other attorneys told a group of about 60 people that they could not discuss cases. In addition to the jurors, the group included people associated with the defense of Wounded Knee leaders Dennis Banks and Russell Means, representatives of national church organizations, the National Education Association, the National Student Association and the American Civil Liberties Union. The meeting, organized by defense attorney Mark Lane, followed a letter sent by 12 of the 16 jurors and alternates in September to Attorney General William Saxbe. The group said the government had been unable to make a case against Banks and Means and therefore it should drop charges against others involved in the Wounded Knee case. They also asked the Justice Department to use its "good offices" to persuade officials of Nebraska and South Dakota to drop state charges growing out of the Wounded Knee incident.

One of the five jurors, Elaine Grono, read a letter support from Lawrence Cohen, St. Paul mayor. She was accompanied by former jurors Joyce Selander, Maureen Coonan, Linda Lacher and Fran Aiken, who said they believed they had an obligation to support the Indian defendants because of what they had learned during the eight-month trial. After the meeting, the former jurors said that the government attorneys appeared to be interested, but they said they were skeptical about the outcome of the conference. "It was just like the trial, when the FBI and government witnesses were on the stand," said Ms.

Coonan. "There was a lot of fancy footwork but you tend not to believe them," Ms. Selander said. Diabetes-detection test to be given throughout area The Twin Cities Diabetes Association, will sponsor a diabetes detection campaign Nov. 17 to National Diabetes Week.
