generations may be whiEzing across the United States on 200-foot concrete highways, built by the government Itself without a single crossing to slow up traffic and with wide banked curveo to main cam steady speeds. The vision is based on a bill introduced In the last congress by Senator Coleman DuPont of Delaware. -DuPont has received favorable comment on his project from highway officials in all pails of tfje country and has gained the backing of many influential men. According to the bill, tha roads would be termed military high- wgys and as such would be constructed under tho supervision of the federal government The system would consist of a road running from the northernmost point of Maine to the southern tip of Florida; another road from the 1101 thwest coi ner of Washington to tho southern edge of California and a third connecting the southern border of the United States. Straight Across Country The fourth and perhaps most widely traveled highway would the 41st patallel of latitude from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast, making as direct a cut across the country as possible, Another road would leave this central at about 100 longi- tUde and go northwest to connect with the west coast highway in Washington.

Finally there would be a road leaving the central H. Tffzy a about 95th longitude and proceeding southward to connect with the southern highway on the Tesas coast The unusual part of this scheme 1 is that none of these highways is i to pass through any town of more than 2300 population. It is to skirt such cities as New York, Philadelphia, Columbus, Indlan- apoHs, Denver, and Ban Francisco, rather than delay traffic by "i coming part of them. 3n anticipation of this vast sys: tern, the bill provides for a eral survey commission consisting of five members of the president's cabinet and Bis persons appointed by the president The commission would direct a survey and pur: chase of a oOQ-foot right of way for the roads in the system, and direct the construction of the highways. Leases To Bring Bevcnua After completion of the system, which would take many yeais and which would'lun up into tho bll- iM lions of dollars, the commission is to be conveited Into a coiporation to maintain the highways, lease fjf- sites along the right of way for gas stations, restaurants and other business and perform other activi- -f ties in the control of theso loads.

The yoads themselves are plann- ed for future speedy and heavy feet wide, are contemplated. The two outside strips would be tended for tiucKs and other traffic grolng at thirty milps an liour or less, while the two center strips would be for fast traffic. Aviation Fields Provided There is piovisioii in the bill for tourists' camps, emergency landing fields, radio and othpr electrical communication facilities and for additional structures and aids to air navigation All cais must enter the load from the left and without crossing either road. Ramps would be used. Cars might leave the outside road from the right on the road level, but no cais should be allowed to enter on the road level Federal Road Only This system would be entirely apart from the fedeial aid system of state roads now being constructed.

It would be under entire federal supervision and all ib.9 states would have to do with It would be to sell or lease the lights of way to the government Tremendous increase of transcontinental traffic In Hie labt few years lead the sponsors of this system to believe these loada will more tfian pay for themselves in a fiw years. They will follow the trend of population and will make good business spots from which considerable financial returns may be expected. ---MODESTO JTBtVS-HEK Chevrolet Imperial Landau Sedan The 1028 Chevrolet Imperial Landau Sedan is a car at beauty and leflncmeat.
