LOCKS BEING PUT IN SHAPE FOR START OF NAVIGATION APRIL 6 Ripley Richards, Locktender, Busy With Work; Water Below Dam Is Very Low. DE PERE -With navigation on Fox scheduled to open officially on Monday, the locks here are being put in readiness for the arrival of the first boat of the season.

Only minor work has to be done, and it consists mainly in painting gates and other exposed parts of the locks in grey, and the hand railings in black. Ripley Richards, the lockmaster, is engaged now In completing that job. Whether improvements will be made soon to the dam at this point on the river is not known by the lock tender. It is reported that the a abutment to the dam Ina be replaced with a concrete structure, as the earth filed crib is being undermined by the water. New work may be done, but the government may conclude to repair parts of the dam where needed.

Another piece of work said to be contemplated 18 to strengthen the banks of the canal basin. Water in Fox river above the dam is high, but below the dam it is low. Whether boats will experience serious trouble In navigating between De Pere and Green Bay remains to be seen. Lack of snow and rain, and the fact that the Chicago drainage canal is taking great quantities of water from the Great Lakes, are given as reasons for the shallowness along the shores of the Fox at this time. The water is lower this spring than in years, according to those who many watch the levels.

The gradual drop. ping of the river level is due to the heavy withdrawals by the Chicago Opportunities! ButYou are not able to take advantage of them!
