Jackie Gutierrez wants to be a role model for Colombian youth, but from his release by Baltimore at the end of spring training until the Phillies called on May 29, he was just another unemployed guy hanging out with relatives in Miami He didnt much like it. Aside from being a very bad way to go about the business of being a role model, unemployment was uncomfortable. was a tough time," Gutierrez said this week. "In 11 years (of professional baseball), it was the first time I was off during the So when the Phillies offered a job at Triple A Maine; they didnt have to ask twice. Gutierrez.

28, hadnt given much thought to adjusting to life after baseball: he wanted back into the game, and would do anything to make it "I'm not going to give up." Gutierrez said. Last Friday, the Phillies rewarded his persistence. When they traded veteran utility infielder Luis Aguayo to the Yankees, they called Gutierrez up to take his place. So far 100 meters in the '64 Olympics. "You gotta do it.

Nobody's gonna do it for you." he said. "I want to give an example to my country." That won't be an easy task, but he is closer to doing it in Philadelphia than he was in Miami. Tonight, the Phils head for Houston and a date with Nolan Ryan (6-7, 4.44 ERA). Mike Maddux (2-0, 3.09) is the Phils' scheduled starter. Best of the Rest Well, it isn't basketball season, a fact that has been proved over and over again this summer by the piddling crowds at Aces games.

But you want to take a look at the rookies and free agents aiming for a spot on the 88 Sixers, they're going at it twice a day at St. Joseph's Fieldhouse. Only the afternoon session (2 to 4 p.m.) is open to the public, today and tomorrow. Admission is $2 for adults. SI for children.

The Sixers' top rookie, Hersey Hawkins, is busy elsewhere, trying out for the VS. Olympic team. he has gone l-for-6 in his first look at National League pitching. Gutierrez said he has gone to former Baltimore teammate Mike Young, fellow NL newcomer Phil Bradley and Juan Samuel, a winter league acquaintance, for advice. He doesnt doubt that he can fashion a role for himself here once he gets comfortable.

"I'm in shape. I feel good," he said. Gutierrez was the Boston Red Sox's Rookie of the Year in 1984. when he hit .263 in 151 games as the team's starting shortstop. He made both the Sporting News and Topps all-rookie teams.

But Gutierrez missed almost two months of the 198S season with a knee injury, then made 11 errors in a 26-game span in August and pretty much wrote himself out of the Red Sox's plans. He was traded to Baltimore after that season, and spent '86 bouncing between the Orioles and Triple A Rochester. Last year, he played only three games in Baltimore, all as a pinch-runner. So his release this spring wasn't unexpected. But he didn't expect to spend a couple of months in makeshift workouts with school-age nephews in Miami before anybody called.

Gutierrez feels a little pressure as only the third Colombian to make the big leagues. There was Luis Castro, a Philadelphia A's pitcher in 1902, and then there was Gutierrez's brother-in-law, Orlando Ramirez, (Angels shortstop, 1974-79) and then there was Gutierrez. Also, he comes from an athletic family his father. Campo Gutierrez, threw the javelin for Colombia in the 1936 Olympics, and his brother.
