But if a guy wants to play in the NFL, he has to show he can compete with the players from Oklahoma, Miami and Penn State. After appearances in three postseason games, Gordie Lockbaum believes he showed NFL scouts he belongs.

"I felt comfortable," the two-way Holy Cross star said last night before accepting the Amateur Athlete of the Year award at the Philadelphia Sports Writers' Association's annual dinner. ROBERT PARISH pulled down 866 rebounds in '81 -'82. his best year as a Celtic. Who holds the Celtics single season mark of 1 ,930 rebounds? A. BILL RUSSELL B.

TOM SANDERS C. TOMMY HEIIMSOHN D. DAVE COWEIMS See below for answer. "He offers constructive criticism and I listen," Chris said, "because it's like getting a free clinic from Doctor J- With Michael Anderson and John Rankin on the team, the 6-5 Arizin isn't expected to score. "I try to rebound, hustle, do what it takes for us to win," he said.

Chris runs downcourt with his shoulders slightly hunched, providing an eerie imitation of his father's running style. Informed of the similarity, Chris laughed and said, "I wish I could play like him." Night School Telling some stories about his basketball background, Paul Arizin was one of the hits of last night's banquet at the Cherry Hill Hyatt. When people are amazed that he was cut from La Salle High School's he tells them, "I wasn't good enough." Arizin polished his skills on the playgrounds of South Philly and in the tough independent leagues. "In South Philly, there was one basket for every 50,000 kids," he recalled. "I used to walk eight blocks at night to a schoolyard where the only light was a street light.

You could see the basket, but you couldn't see anyone to pass to. Maybe that's why I was never a great passer." Arizin played in Chamberlain's record 100-point game, but said the highlights of his NBA career were witnessing the Chamberlain-Bill Russell duels and winning the 1956 NBA championship over the Pistons, who then played in Fort Wayne, Ind. Fast-Lane Flyers Fan One of the pleasures at these dinners is seeing athletes from different sports get to know each other. During the reception, Michael Andretti, whose four victories last season topped all Indy-car drivers, mentioned that he was a Flyers fan. A few minutes later, the Nazareth, resident was introduced to Ron Sutter, Dave Poulin and Ron Hextall, of the Flyers.

As they spoke, a mutual respect was obvious. The only downer for Andretti was discovering that his Mercedes had been broken into in the hotel parking lot. Recruiting Secret Another popular speaker was Dick MacPherson, the Syracuse football coach, whose team compiled an 11-0-1 record and was tied by Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. DELAWARE VALLEYS ONLY LLU i IMJL "But it was a humbling experience. Suddenly, in the postseason games you weren't the star anymore.

There were so many good athletes." Lockbaum, who scored 22 touchdowns in each of his last two seasons at Holy Cross, played in the Blue-Gray game, the East-West Shrine Classic and the Senior Bowl. His best memories will be of the East-West game and the Senior Bowl. In the East-West game in San Francisco, he was used at five positions: cornerback, free safety, strong safety, fullback and wide receiver. His Senior Bowl appearance, in Mobile, was strictly on defense. And the Blue-Gray game in Birmingham, was strictly forgettable.

"I didn't play that much," Lockbaum said. "They had too many players and there wasn't enough time for all of us." Dick Steinberg, the player personnel director for the New England Patriots, expects the 5-11, 195-pound Lockbaum to be drafted in the middle rounds and to be pointed toward defense. The Eagles are the first choice of Lockbaum, who is from Glassboro, N.J. A Fatherly Refresher During a Drexel basketball trip to Springfield, last month, Chris Arizin visited the Basketball Hall of Fame. Arizin browsed at all the plaques, but one was special the one commemorating the induction of his father, Paul.

"I had been there when I was 10 years old, when he was inducted," said Chris, a sophomore reserve for Drexel. "But it didn't have as much effect on me as this time did. "I knew he played basketball, and he was great. But it wasn't until I saw salutes to) Wilt Chamberlain and Julius Erving that it really put things in perspective. He's not only a great father, but he was a great basketball player." Last night Paul Arizin received the Living Legend Award at the sports writers' dinner.

Evidently, it is only on occasions such as this that Chris and his brothers and sisters hear about Paul's distinguished career at Villa- nova (1,648 points in three seasons) and in the NBA with the Philadelphia Warriors (16,266 points in 11 seasons). "He likes telling stories about the old times," Chris said. "But he doesn't like mentioning what he did. I guess it's like the true soldiers who never talk about the battles they were in." Paul, now retired from IBM, is a regular at Drexel games. Mario Cuomo and the New York state legislature. Last night, MacPherson was seated next to Gordie Lockbaum on the dais. "I recruited Gordie, and this is the closest I've been to him since I recruited him," MacPherson said. "The secret to recruiting is: Recruit the mothers." Joking, MacPherson said, "Mrs. Lockbaum came to Syracuse and Gordie went to Holy Cross." Where Essington Aivnue meets Passyunk I Langfmnie NBA Stars Might Be Eligible for '92 Games Pontiac More! FIBA has 173 member federations and a simple majority of those present at the congress is required to pass the move, Stankovic said. LAKE PLACID, N.Y. The Canadian Olympic hockey team added three professionals to its roster for the Winter Olympics, including hard-hitting winger Jim Peplinski of the Calgary Flames. The Winnipeg Jets loaned defenseman Tim Watters, who was scoreless in 21 games, for the Games and former NHL forward Merlin Malinowski also was added to the lineup. Flames spokesman Mike Burke said Peplinski will join the Olympic team in Calgary on Feb.

The governing board of the International Amateur Basketball Federation recommended rules changes yesterday that would open Olympic and world championship basketball tournaments to professional men and women. Any such rules changes could not be implemented in time for the Seoul Olympics September. F1BA secretary general Bora Stankovic said the board called an extraordinary FIBA congress for April 1989 in Munich, West Germany to put the proposal to a vote. Stankovic said chances were excellent that the full FIBA congress would accept the recommendation. If the congress votes in favor of the proposal, NBA and other professionals would be eligible for the 1990 World Championships in Argentina and the 1992 Olym T13SSn -A.
