From 1970 until he became ill earlier this year, Mahalik manned a booth at the Veterans Administration Center on Wissahickon Avenue. Every day he took three buses to get to the center from his home at 29th and Dickinson streets. He advised veterans on their benefits and helped survivers of veterans and funeral directors with paper work. A quiet, self-effacing man, Cy Mahalik had an Mahalik encyclopedic knowledge of the Catholic War Veterans organization and held numerous posts from the local to the na- Mahalik level. 1983, he was given the Order of Sebastian Award at a banquet in honor.

Originally from Mount Carmel, Mahalik tried his hand at coal mining, but after a week he decided to go into? the Army. He spent several hitches, off and on, in the Army before World War II. In the late 1930s, he went to work at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as a carpenter. After the war started, although he was 40 years old, he re-enlisted and served in Europe. In the Catholic War Veterans he was known as If he didn't know the answer, he would find it.

He was generous with his time and charitable with his money. He donated to every cause that came down the pike. He never bragged about his accomplishments, he was such an inwardly person." Mahalik's daughter said he also was active in his church, St. Gabriel's, and often was called upon for his skills as a carpenter to help the church custodian or to work at the carnival. From 1960 to 1962, Mahalik served as national second vice commander of the Catholic War Veterans of America.

He was on the convention credentials committee from 1970 to 1986, and was co-chairman of the national credentials committee from 1971 to 1986. He was commander of the United Veterans Council of Philadelphia in 1958 and was a member of the board of the council from 1959 until the his death.
