Transit officials told Phantom Rider the last rail commuter station to be opened in Philadelphia was Suburban Station in Penn Center. Pennsylvania Railroad big shots cut the red ribbon on that transit edifice in 1930.

The Ivy Ridge station cost $400,000 to build and includes the main waiting room, free parking for 102 cars, modern lighting and a high-level platform to make boarding easier for the elderly and the handicapped. THE IVY RIDGE project is part of a SEPTA program to im- Phantom Rider prove rail services and increase parking at the stations. Trains begin leaving the station at 6:27 a.m. weekdays, 7:23 a.m. on Saturdays.

Running time between Ivy Ridge and Suburban Station will be 20 minutes. Forty-two trains will operate weekdays; 32 trips on Saturdays. There will be no Sunday or holiday service. Trains serving the Ivy Ridge Station, located on Umbria Street between Lemonte Street and Parker Avenue, will operate along Conrail's Manayunk Line tracks. Four SEPTA bus lines will serve the station Routes 35, 61 and the 21 bus, which like the station itself officially went into operation today.

(The 21 is the first new bus line to be put into service through the Manayunk-Roxborough area since the Korean War was front page news.) WEEKDAY PEAK service will be offered from the station to Andorra. Off-peak and Saturday service will be extended into Chestnut Hill from the Andorra Loop. Phantom Rider is elated about the two new transit services. It means the SEPTA board is finally getting serious about serving Philadelphia commuters. And it's about time.
