f Tuesday. December 24. 1985 PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS Page 29 AFRICA Continued from preceding page ' Is More," read the curious contain-; er at the GCC Echelon Cinema), j the last row, the whole schmeer. Romantic The movie certainly fulfilled our - expectations as a sort of African se-; quel to "The Way We Were." re-s plete with every sudsy romance-I novel cliche, but it did next to nothing for the fascinating real-life ; character played by Streep, the nonconforming novelist IsaK Dine-t sen. According to this movie, Dine-I sen was just another brilliant, lib- eral, ahead-of-her-time woman with t a libido problem that could be cured only by a reckless, irascible s adventurer, named Denys Finch Hatton (and played a bit too coldly, if as usual, by Redford). But so what! No one in the the- I ater seemed to care about who or what Isak Dinesen was or what she wrote or what she meant to litera- l 'ture and feminism. They were I there to see Meryl Streep act her head off (which she does) and c share an torrid, ill-fated love affair i with perhaps the most romantic ' matinee idol ever (which she also I does). "Out of Africa" may not work as a big-budgeted, highbrow examination of a complex woman (a combination travelogue and intimate love story), but judging from the red, tear-stained eyes of the small groups of Terminally Single Women at the showing we attended, it does something more important: It deals with female fantasies and fulfillment. Dinesen, the pen name of Baroness Karen Blixen, remarks at one point that an extremely dangerous adventure an arduous trek through a particularly barren part of Africa to meet her husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) was "fun." And that's the point of this effectively silly movie. Everything for Karen "Isak" Dinesen was fun her marriage of convenience to Baron Blixen, her settlement in Kenya, her business dealings with her husband's failing coffee plantation there, her relationships with the natives and, of course, her affair with Denys, the great white hunter. Together, she and Denys hunt lions, get scratched and dusty together, share moonlight swims, and dance, also in the moonlight, in the middle of the wilds to Mozart, no less. In perhaps the film's most sexual moment, Redford gently washes Streep's hair. (I use the stars' names rather than their characters' because, by this point, they've ceased being Denys and Karen and have become Beautiful Movie Stars.) Director Sydney Pollack has filmed some lovely and exciting animalsurvival footage, and writer Kurt Luedtke has given Streep and Redford the most literate of dialogue to read, the best coming smack-dab in the middle of a sex scene when, in intense close-up, Redford whispers, "Dont move!" At that point, "Out of Africa" hooked most of the women in the audience and inspired a lot of the guys. One at least. Parental guide: Rated PG for implied sex and some of its candid scenes of violence tOj and, by,, Wi-. mats. 16TH & CHESTNUT STREETS 567 2310 REGENCY S2.60 T 1:1 S PM "ENEMY MNE" 1:15-3:30v5?45--OO 2-BO SMEJOR CITIZENS ANVTME " - - - - - m m M T - . i - i tfec Ifcnrtrtac-Start W ma an wees Mf cmau 4 nr. tacnii rutin wim &J mw mestr mamtmt w?m wocowumcs CaMitfaBtiM.Mf PMi EMC TWH FUZa tt iJMMlN otPtansirttfiMyt.
